Melissa Barrera’s Scream 7 Exit Means 1 Legacy Character’s Return Would Make No Sense

Melissa Barrera’s Scream 7 Exit Means 1 Legacy Character’s Return Would Make No Sense

Scream 7 continues to face a couple of challenges, including the return of a reboot character whose appearance would no longer make sense, despite being a legacy character. The Scream saga is expected to come to an end (again) with Scream 7, the closing chapter in the reboot trilogy. However, Scream 7 has gone through major obstacles with the firing of Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega dropping out, and director Christopher Landon leaving the project. Although Scream 7 now has a new director thanks to franchise creator Kevin Williamson, the film still has some major challenges to overcome.

With the reboot’s Final Girls, Sam (Barrera) and Tara (Ortega), no longer around to lead the trilogy’s final movie, Scream 7 is bringing original Final Girl Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) back after she skipped Scream 6. With Campbell returning, rumors quickly began to emerge about the possible return of other legacy characters, with the ones expected to join Sidney being Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) and Scream 3’s Mark Kincaid (Patrick Dempsey), Sidney’s husband. However, one legacy character who returned in the reboot can no longer return as it wouldn’t make sense anymore.

Billy Loomis’ Return In Scream 7 Is Out Of Place Without Melissa Barrera’s Sam

Billy Loomis Was Revealed To Be Sam’s Biological Father

Scream 2022 had a couple of surprises for fans of Wes Craven’s Scream movies, and one of the biggest ones was the return of Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich). Billy was killed by Sidney at the end of Scream after he and Stu Macher (Matthew Lillard) revealed themselves as the Ghostface killers, but Scream 2022 brought him back through hallucinations. Sam was revealed to be Billy’s biological daughter, and she had some unnamed mental health problems that made her have hallucinations of Billy telling her to continue his legacy.

Before Scream 7 went through a whole creative reset, Billy was expected to return in Scream 7 as there are many unanswered questions about Sam and her link to Billy. However, now that Barrera is no longer part of Scream 7, bringing Billy back wouldn’t make sense as Sam was the one who had hallucinations of him. Ulrich is aware that Billy doesn’t really have a place in Scream 7 anymore, saying that he doesn’t “really see a way that happens” and that he imagines he’s “probably out of it” now that Barrera is no longer part of the cast.

Billy Loomis Not Returning In Scream 7 Kills Hopes For Another Legacy Character’s Return

Without Billy, Another Legacy Character’s Return Is Impossible

Billy Loomis’ return in Scream 7 made way for speculation and theories on the possible return of another legacy character: Stu Macher. Despite Stu being killed in Scream after Sidney threw a TV on his head, fans have theorized for years that he could have survived and could return as a Ghostface killer at some point. Stu’s return would have been somewhat believable if done in the same way as Billy: through Sam’s hallucinations. However, just like with Billy, without Sam, Stu’s return would make no sense.

Stu’s return in the Scream reboot trilogy is now even less likely with Kevin Williamson directing Scream 7, as he has already said that Stu is definitely dead. Scream 7 might bring other legacy characters back in addition to Sidney and Gale, but Billy Loomis and Stu Macher can no longer return without Sam Carpenter.
