Melissa Barrera Is Right About Sam Carpenter’s Scream 6 Ending

Melissa Barrera Is Right About Sam Carpenter’s Scream 6 Ending

Scream 7 is moving forward without its two Final Girls, one of them Melissa Barrera, but she’s right about her character’s ending in Scream 6. In 2022, the Scream franchise was rebooted with a fifth movie, 11 years after Scream 4, the supposed closing chapter of the saga. Scream 2022 brought the original movies’ trio back – Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox), and Dewey Riley (David Arquette) – and introduced a new generation of characters who were supposed to take over the lead of the reboot movies, especially Sam (Barrera) and Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega).

Sam, Tara, and their friends were targeted by two new Ghostface killers in Scream 2022, with Sam and Tara becoming the saga’s new Final Girls. The now-called “Core Four” returned in Scream 6 for another encounter with more than one Ghostface, though now in New York City. Unfortunately, Barrera was fired from Scream 7, Ortega dropped out due to salary disputes and scheduling conflicts, and director Christopher Landon also left, so Scream 7 had to change its whole plan. Scream 7 is now back in development, and though Sam will be missed, Barrera is right about her Scream 6 ending.

Despite Scream’s reboot timeline being planned to be a trilogy, Barrera is satisfied with the ending Sam got in Scream 6, more so as she was only contracted for two Scream movies. In an interview with Collider, Barrera opened up about her time in the Scream saga and where her character was left at the end of Scream 6. Barrera shared that she feels the ending of Scream 6 was very good for Sam, so she doesn’t feel like there are loose ends left. Barrera revealed she was only contracted for two movies, so she feels like she and Sam got proper closure.

Barrera added that “everything is perfect” because she did the two movies she was contracted to do and Sam got a good ending in Scream 6, despite fans hoping that Sam’s arc would continue in a third reboot movie. Sam was certainly expected to return in Scream 7, more so as the audience was left with the big mystery of who she and Tara’s mother is and where she was during the events of Scream 2022 and Scream 6. Leaving this aside, Barrera is right and Sam got her good ending in Scream 6, so Scream 7 can move on without her.

Scream 6 Is A Good Ending To Sam’s Story

Scream 6 Tara and Sam walking down the street at the end

Scream 2022 revealed that Sam is Billy Loomis’ daughter, and she had visions of her deceased father trying to push her to continue his legacy. Sam seemed to have embraced this side of her at the end of Scream 2022 when she stabbed Richie (Jack Quaid), who was revealed to be one of the Ghostface killers, and cut his throat. This left the question of whether Sam would give in to her paternal heritage and become a killer, but Scream 6 put those ideas to rest.

Despite still having visions of her father, Sam had a chance to continue her father’s legacy, but she got rid of his Ghostface mask and reunited with Tara and Danny, Sam’s new boyfriend. Scream 6 saw Sam confronting her father and his influence one more time, but she ultimately chose a completely different path, one that she can call her own. Scream 6 gives a very hopeful future to Sam and Tara, so even though they won’t be back in Scream 7, they already have their perfect ending.
