Mean Girls’ Remake Is Still Concerning, But These 2 Casting Choices Are Undeniably Perfect

Mean Girls’ Remake Is Still Concerning, But These 2 Casting Choices Are Undeniably Perfect

Amid the ongoing speculation about whether the 2024 Mean Girls movie musical remake will live up to the success of the original, two casting choices inspire confidence in the upcoming film. While the original Mean Girls came out almost 20 years ago, in 2004, another version is coming to theaters on January 12, 2024, before eventually making its way to Paramount+. The new Mean Girls film adapts the 2017 Broadway musical based on the 2004 film, bringing a fresh twist to this cult classic.

However, the Mean Girls remake should avoid iconic moments from the original film, so it can successfully stand on its own. The remake will include several of the performers from the stage musical as well as some from the 2004 film. Reneé Rapp will reprise her role as Regina George from the Broadway musical and Tina Fey will be coming back to play her role of Ms. Norbury. Some characters are completely recast, which leaves viewers wondering whether they can effectively step into the shoes of their predecessors. Nevertheless, two of the fresh faces joining the cast for the 2024 Mean Girls movie musical are perfect for their roles.

Jon Hamm & Busy Phillips Are Perfect Castings For The Mean Girls Musical

The new Mean Girls musical movie cast includes Jon Hamm and Busy Phillips, who are perfect for the roles they are playing. Hamm is stepping into the role of the problematic Coach Carr, who is labeled in the Burn Book as a sexual predator. This is not Hamm’s first time working with Fey, as he was involved in projects alongside her in 30 Rock, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and Modern Love. Hamm is perfect for this gym coach and misinformed sex-ed teacher, as he will infuse his comedic flair into the character.

Busy Phillips is set to take over for Amy Poehler as Regina George’s mother, Mrs. George. Phillips is the star of Girls5Eva, which is a musical comedy TV show on Peacock. This show has Fey as one of the executive producers. Fey and Phillips also worked together on the E! late-night talk show Busy Tonight. Phillips’s comedic chops will help her to shine as a mom who is not a regular mom because she’s a cool mom.

Could The Mean Girls Musical Actually Succeed?

While there is a risk of the Mean Girls musical movie falling short of the success of the original film, there are many positive elements that bring hope for its potential. Firstly, the Broadway production had a highly successful run from 2017 to 2020, only closing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The musical took the best aspects of the Mean Girls film, infusing the narrative with high-energy musical numbers that added fresh comedic flair.

Also, having Tim Meadows and Tina Fey coming back to reprise their parts from the movie, mixed in with Broadway performers like Reneé Rapp ensures a talented ensemble who have extensive experience in the roles. Rapp will be able to wow with the dazzling high notes in “World Burn,” and Fey will keep the charm and goofiness of Ms. Norbury alive. This blended cast will allow for the movie to feel familiar but also carve out its own identity. Ultimately, the musical numbers will bring new energy to this cult classic, promising to make the Mean Girls 2024 movie musical a successful adaptation that stands out in its own right.
