Mean Girls Box Office Dominates In Week 2 Despite New Releases

Mean Girls remains the queen bee at the domestic box office. The new movie musical is based on the 2018 Broadway show, which is based on the 2004 teen comedy, which is based on the 2002 nonfiction book Queen Bees and Wannabes by Rosalind Wiseman. It follows transfer student Cady Heron (Angourie Rice) whose first year in an American high school sees her drawn into a plot to take down the cruel queen bee Regina George (Renée Rapp). The screenplay by original screenwriter Tina Fey is interspersed with songs by composer Jeff Richmond and lyricist Nell Benjamin.

Per Variety, the Mean Girls release is projected to close out its second weekend in domestic theaters with a 3-day gross of $11 million. This will bring its cumulative domestic total north of $49 million. On top of that, the movie has stayed at No. 1 on the domestic chart for the second weekend in a row, beating out new releases including the sci-fi thriller I.S.S. and Ava DuVernay’s Origin.
