MCU’s Vision Show Massively Supports 1 Big New Avengers Team Theory

Marvel Studios is reportedly developing a Vision Disney+ series under the working title Vision Quest (via Variety), which strongly supports an old fan theory regarding the MCU’s new Avengers team. While Vision died at the end of Avengers: Infinity War and was not brought back in Avengers: Endgame, the character was revisited in WandaVision. That said, neither the Vision who lived with Wanda in West View nor SWORD’s White Vision was the same version of the character introduced in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Still, WandaVision’s ending teased that White Vision would have a future in the MCU – which now seems to involve a new team of Avengers as well.

In the comics, Vision Quest was a Vision-centered storyline told as part of the West Coast Avengers’ 1989 comic book run. A founding member of the West Coast Avengers and very much the reason why the additional Avengers team was formed in the first place, Vision was at the center not only of Vision Quest but of many other West Coast Avengers storylines. Curiously, the MCU has already borrowed a lot from the Vision Quest comic book arc, mainly in WandaVision, though nothing regarding a West Coast Avengers project has been mentioned throughout Phase 4 by either Vision or any other Avengers. Still, there have been a few West Coast Avengers setups across the MCU Phase 4, and the fact that a Vision Quest show is reportedly happening supports the arrival of the team.

How The MCU Phase 4 Has Teased The West Coast Avengers

The MCU Phase 4 preferred not to reveal much about the status of the Avengers as a team. In other words, audiences still don’t know, for example, who are the current Avengers, who currently funds the Avengers, and whether the original Avengers’ compound has been rebuilt following the events of Avengers: Endgame. Still, Phase 4 has teased the formation of a West Coast Avengers team at least three times. One was the introduction of John Walker, the US Agent, in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. In the comics, John Walker joined the West Coast Avengers as a representative of the government and was appointed as the team’s new leader, thus replacing Hawkeye.

Marvel’s Phase 4 has also set up Hawkeye’s role in the West Coast Avengers. While Vision was the one to first suggest the formation of a second Avengers team to accommodate the arrival of new heroes and to fight threats the Avengers were failing to face, Hawkeye was the actual first leader of the West Coast Avengers appointed by Vision himself. In Marvel’s Hawkeye episode 2, it was revealed that Kate Bishop’s aunt is named Moira Brandon, who in the comics offers her mansion for Hawkeye to use as the West Coast Avengers’ headquarters. Moira Brandon is not related to Kate Bishop in the comics, meaning that the Hawkeye east egg could indeed be hinting at West Coast Avengers in the MCU.

While not a part of Marvel’s Phase 4, Wonder Man is also joining the MCU. A Wonder Man Disney+ series is reportedly in the works with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Avengers: The Kang Dynasty director Destin Daniel Cretton as a producer. Wonder Man, who is also an aspiring actor and is usually based in Los Angeles, was one of the original members of the West Coast Avengers branch. Wonder Man’s time with the West Coast Avengers led to the complex love triangle storyline involving Scarlet Witch, Vision, and Wonder Man, the last of which was in love with Wanda and went on to refuse to bring Vision’s original consciousness back to White Vision.

How Vision’s Show Can Continue The MCU’s West Coast Avengers Setup

Considering how the MCU is used to combining different storylines into one and rearranging events from Marvel’s Earth-616 comic book timeline, it would be no surprise if the Vision show was used as a sort of origin story for the West Coast Avengers. The Vision Quest comic book storyline only happens after the West Coast Avengers are already formed, but again, the MCU rarely follows the exact timeline of events from the comics. In fact, considering that the Vision Quest comic book arc is where White Vision is formed, a one-on-one adaptation from that comic is no longer possible. Instead, the MCU could see White Vision forming the West Coast Avengers in Vision Quest.

That said, while the Vision series could lead to a West Coast Avengers project, the show would have to better establish White Vision as a character first. Though WandaVision even references comic book panels from the Vision Quest West Coast Avengers storyline, the MCU’s version of White Vision isn’t exactly the same as the comics. The White Vision created by SWORD and that fought the Wanda-created Vision did not seem too interested in following his original counterpart’s footsteps and becoming a superhero. The MCU’s White Vision now has the memories of the original Vision, but it’s still unclear what path the character will follow. Before White Vision potentially forms a new Avengers team, he would have to choose to become an Avenger first.

Who Could Be On The MCU’s West Coast Avengers Team

Despite the MCU’s many differences from the comics in terms of timeline, an MCU West Coast Avengers team could be very comic-accurate. From the founding members of the West Coast Avengers in the comics, the MCU would already be able to use White Vision, Hawkeye, James Rhodes, Wonder Man, and Mockingbird – though whether the MCU’s Mockingbird reference in Hawkeye is the same as from Agents of Shield is difficult to say. Another potential West Coast Avengers member is Scarlet Witch, a founding member of the team in the comics and whose future in the MCU is a question mark.

Scarlet Witch became a villain in the MCU following the end of WandaVision, and after the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse Madness, it’s not easy to imagine Wanda ever becoming a superhero again. That said, Scarlet Witch did choose to almost sacrifice herself at the end of Doctor Strange 2 to destroy the infinite versions of the Darkhold across all multiverses, meaning a redemption arc for Scarlet Witch could still be in the cards. Therefore, joining a new Avengers team put together by White Vision would work for Scarlet Witch’s future in the MCU. In terms of anti-heroes, US Agent would be a likely candidate considering the comics, although that would depend on what Marvel’s Thunderbolts movie will establish.

Another character introduced in the MCU Phase 4 who could join the West Coast Avengers is Moon Knight, who has been a part of the team in the comics. Moon Knight joining an Avengers team in the MCU is not too far-fetched, although the Moon Knight series did not set up many connections between Moon Knight and other heroes in the MCU. Hank Pym and Janet van Dyne, the first Ant-Man and Wasp duo, are not active superheroes in the MCU, but they could still play a role in a potential West Coast Avengers. Hank Pym was not a fan of the Avengers in the MCU, and having the original Ant-Man and Wasp creating their own Avengers team on the West Coast could be an interesting creative liberty if properly set up in Vision Quest.
