Maya Rudolph & Tim Meadows Interview: Hubie Halloween

For this year’s spooky season, Netflix is offering some laughs along with its scares in Hubie Halloween. The latest Adam Sandler vehicle, which drops on the streaming service October 7, follows one man’s quest to save the holiday despite the jeers of his town.

But the comedy king is not along in this family-friendly fright fest, as he’s joined by fellow legends such as Maya Rudolph and Tim Meadows. The hilarious veteran actors spoke to Screen Rant about their odd couple dynamic and the complexity of the costumes they got to wear.

You guys are comedy legends, but talk to me about the characters you play.

Maya Rudolph: We play a couple who has been married for quite some time. I can only speak for my character when I say I don’t care very much for my husband. I think deep down she may love him, but not that much. She really is irritated by him, and I think she’s irritated by how much he loves her. So, the nicer he is, the worse she gets.

Tim Meadows: Yeah, I see that exactly as just explained. It’s so true.

Did you guys have any input on any of those costumes you wore in this film?

Maya Rudolph: I didn’t, but I was very happy with my choice. I’ve always wanted to be the Bride of Frankenstein I did learn during quarantine that I can grow those stripes. That was a newfound thing that I’ve learned about myself. Yes, it’s real.

Tim, the costume that you had was hilarious. Did it take a long time to put on or get ready?

Tim Meadows: Yeah, I felt like I was shooting Iron Man or something sometimes, because they had a group of people to come and put it on or take it off. They had to warn production if I had to use the bathroom or if I was getting overheated or something. The hardest part of that costume was sitting down in the car.

Maya Rudolph: Yeah, my head didn’t fit in the car. They had to take the seat out or something.

Tim Meadows: Yeah, it was hard. But that’s the one costume I would love to have in real life. It’s so cool.

You have natural chemistry and are masters of improv. How much of what you shot was left on the cutting room floor?

Maya Rudolph: I think we did a little bit of improv in the car, right? Didn’t we?

Tim Meadows: Yeah, we did. I think a lot of the stuff that we did is in the movie. Because some of the time, we would improvise something or they would come back to us and say, “Say this.”

We sort of discovered the finger thing that I was doing in the movie. Those lines when Maya was talking to me about why would that turn me on, that was all improvised or shouted to us while we were filming.

Maya Rudolph: Yeah, and then Sandler would come over and tell me to be nastier to Tim.

Tim Meadows: Yeah, and he would tell me to want her more.

You both looked like you had a blast shooting this film, but what was your favorite scene to shoot?

Tim Meadows: Favorite scene?

Maya Rudoph: I think the drive-in for me.

Tim Meadows: Yeah, I would say the drive-in was probably my favorite too. Because I think during those scenes, we really were discovering the comedy between the characters.
