“May The Fold Be With You”: See Google’s First Foldable Pixel In I/O Teaser

Google has released a new teaser for its annual developer conference, containing glimpses of the company’s first foldable smartphone, the Pixel Fold. Rumors about Google’s folding phone have been circulating online for quite some time, with various reports claiming that the smartphone has been codenamed “Felix.” The most recent piece of information about the device claims that it will come with the most durable hinge on a foldable, giving competition to the current segment leader, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4.Those waiting to see official images of the Google Pixel Fold got a pleasant surprise on May 4, when the @madebygoogle Twitter account tweeted it in a teaser video. The eight-second-long video contains four shots, each revealing a different aspect of the much-awaited Google foldable. In the first shot, one can see the triple rear camera setup on the back panel of the Google Pixel Fold. The cameras are on a slightly raised metallic module, like the horizontal visor on the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 series. It also houses the flash and primary microphone.

The second shot shows what looks like the top frame of the device. It houses four antenna bands, a speaker, and what looks like the SIM card tray. Unfortunately, this part of the video doesn’t provide a good look at the phone’s hinge. In the next shot, the Pixel Fold’s screen unfolds in all its glory. Although the bezels are relatively thicker than what users see on modern-day smartphones like the Pixel 7 or the iPhone 14, Google has utilized the extra screen estate well. Like the Taskbar on the bottom of the Galaxy Z Fold 4’s display, the Pixel Fold also has a couple of apps aligned toward the bottom.

One can’t miss the Material You theme that applies the same grayish-brown color scheme to all the elements on the screen. Further, the teaser confirms that the Pixel Fold won’t feature an under-display front camera on the main screen. Instead, the front-facing camera is housed in the top bezel. Users can see the volume rockers and the power button on the right panel. Finally, in the last shot of the teaser, Google unveils the Pixel Fold’s cover display, with an active always-on display, and two gorgeous colors the smartphone will be available in — black and white.

Google has used the same design language as in the Pixel 6 and the Pixel 7 series, and it looks beautiful on the Pixel Fold. The dual-tone finish and minimal design elements give the phone a classy look. Although Google will announce the phone at the I/O 2023, it could be a while before Pixel Fold is up for sale. The expected price of the phone is about $1,700, and the company is said to offer trade-in and bundle offers to push sales.
