Masters of the Universe: Revelation Title Explained By Kevin Smith

Kevin Smith, the creator of Masters of the Universe: Revelation, recently explained the show’s title. Following Netflix’s successful revamping of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Smith’s project will be the streamer’s second animated show based on the iconic 1980s series, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. Smith’s series features an ensemble voice cast that includes Chris Wood as He-Man, Mark Hamill as Skeletor, and Sarah Michelle Gellar as Teela. Additional roles are voiced by Diedrich Bader, Kevin Conroy, Liam Cunningham, Lena Headey, and Justin Long.

As a direct sequel to the original series, Revelation will pick up following the final battle between He-Man, the alter ego of Prince Adam, and Skeletor, the blue-skinned humanoid with a bare-bone skull. After numerous teases from Smith regarding his reaction to the trailer, the show’s first images, and the show’s premiere date, fans finally got their first real look at Revelation today about a month and a half out from its release date. The show’s first teaser trailer revealed its epic, action packed-story.

Now, during the ongoing festivities of Netflix‘s Geeked Week, Day 4 was centered around anime and animation. Kevin Smith appeared and took some time to explain what his series’ subtitle, Revelation, refers to. Read Smith’s explanation below:

Revelation in the title – Masters of the Universe: Revelation – refers to Teela’s journey. Teela finds out something about her that was hinted at in the old legacy show. And that’s a kernel that we blew out and really played with in this show. So the revelation in question really has to do with Teela. And that’s because, if you remember the old show, at the very beginning, they would talk about, ‘Only three others know his secret.’ And it was like, the Sorceress, Man-At-Arms, and Orko, as well as Cringer. Teela, who He-Man fought [with] side-by-side, and Teela, who protected Adam when he wasn’t He-Man, was always left out of that. She was kept in the dark like Lois Lane. So our approach for the story was like, ‘What happens if she finds out? What happens when she learns who He-Man really is? And what if she learned that not from him confessing?’ It wasn’t him going, ‘You know what, I think you can handle this.’ It was by way of the adventure, of the epic. Something happens that kind of breaks everybody’s world and all the revelations are revealed.

Masters of the Universe: Revelation Title Explained By Kevin Smith

Based on Smith’s explanation of the title, it sounds like his He-Man series will actually focus more on another character, Teela, as she attempts to find the missing Power sword and save the universe. In previous installments of the franchise, Teela was known as Captain of the Royal Guard at the palace of Eternos and therefore tasked with protecting and training Prince Adam of Eternia, though she is unaware of his alter ego.

Though Smith’s series might focus on a different character in Teela, he has previously said his series will not attempt to reinvent the franchise, and instead will pay homage to the original show with a slight adult-oriented spin. Now that Smith has revealed that the show’s title refers to Teela, perhaps audiences have a better idea of what to expect when Masters of the Universe: Revelation debuts on Netflix next month.
