The Masked Singer season 6 runner-up Todrick Hall is a huge Britney Spears fan and couldn’t give up the opportunity to perform one of the pop star’s songs on the show, but he revealed that he wanted to perform a Britney song on American Idol. Todrick performed as the Bull in season 6 of the singing competition show and made it to the finale; however, he did not take home the coveted masked trophy. The singer went head-to-head with Queen of Hearts but unfortunately came in second place. And the Queen, revealed to be singer/songwriter Jewel, was named the season 6 champion. Before making it to The Masked Singer stage, Todrick competed on another singing competition show, American Idol. The star made it to the Top 16 before being eliminated alongside three other contestants.
When it was time to perform on The Masked Singer, Todrick admitted it was a far different experience as he was more comfortable being himself this time around. As an avid member of the Britney Army, Todrick chose to perform the pop star’s 2008 song, “Circus.” Britney has had a challenging yet triumphant year as she spent 2021 fighting to end her 13-year conservatorship. On November 12, the legal arrangement was finally put to an end. Britney’s situation was made public by fans, who launched the Free Britney movement to bring awareness to the singer’s unfavorable circumstances. During the post-chorus breakdown of “Circus,” Todrick quickly added, “Free Britney,” into the song’s lyrics.
As a loyal Britney fan, Todrick knew he had to perform one of the star’s songs on The Masked Singer. Todrick told Page Six that he’s been wanting to perform “Circus” since his time on American Idol; however, the former show didn’t feel like the right environment. The former Bull explained that he decided against singing the song on American Idol because he was “so nervous about what America would think.” The star further explained, “I just felt like I was gonna feel silly if I did that because everyone else had guitars and were wearing clothes from like H&M or something.“
Throughout The Masked Singer season 6, Bull’s clue packages always hinted towards the performer feeling like an outcast and having to learn to be his authentic self, despite what anyone else thought. His time on the show became a much more authentic experience than his first time on a singing competition show. Though Todrick stuck to the status quo on American Idol, he told Page Six, “I always regretted it. I would have been so much happier being eliminated from the show if I had done the performance that I wanted to do.“
Being his authentic self and going through with the performance he wanted to do seemed to have paid off as he made it further along on The Masked Singer than he did on American Idol. Bull was a fan-favorite for his stage presence and electric energy, which resulted from Bull’s authenticity on stage. His performance of “Circus” was one of his best of the season and completely blew away the panelists and audience; he was undoubtedly one of the best performers to ever compete on the show throughout all seasons. While he may not have taken home the trophy, his individuality and self-assurance were much appreciated and inspirational for everyone watching. He surely made Britney proud.
