Marvel’s Young Avengers Movie Setup Makes 1 MCU Show In Desperate Need Of A Season 2

Iman Vellani’s delightful debut as Kamala Khan in Ms. Marvel set the fresh-faced hero apart as a rising star in the MCU. While the series explored the young hero’s discovery of her powers, Ms. Marvel proved her mettle amongst the strongest of heroes in The Marvels. Now teased to become the leader of the MCU’s burgeoning Young Avengers team, Ms. Marvel’s titular hero needs a season 2 more than ever.

Despite being one of the most exciting new heroes in the MCU, Ms. Marvel suffered from low viewership, while The Marvels’ dismal box office performance was record-breaking. As such, no season 2 has been confirmed for the show. Nonetheless, The Marvels’ ending makes it quite clear that young Kamala Khan is going to be a very important leader among heroes, making fleshing out her story further before such an event official happens a crucial matter.

Iman Vellani, who plays Kamala Khan in the MCU, gives an honest update about Ms. Marvel season 2 after she made her big-screen debut in The Marvels.

Marvel’s Young Avengers Teases Means Ms. Marvel Season 2 Would Be A Huge Help To The MCU

The ending scene of The Marvels takes the first concrete steps toward making the Young Avengers an MCU reality, as Ms. Marvel approaches Hawkeye‘s Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) to propose her team of “kid superheroes.” While the Young Avengers are set to come together in Phase 6, there will be a lot of set-up required to bridge the gap between The Marvels’ tease and the team’s actual debut. This is where a prospective Ms. Marvel season 2 could be especially important.

Given Kamala’s significant research into her peers, there’s no believable way to move forward with a new Ms. Marvel appearance that doesn’t feature her plan for younger superheroes. A second season would be the ideal project to explore Ms. Marvel’s recruitment of fellow heroes, opening doors for guest appearances or cameos from characters like Cassie Lang (Kathryn Newton) or Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne). As the leader of this future team, it would make the most sense for audiences to see Ms. Marvel’s journey coming into that role, further setting up the MCU’s future.

Ms. Marvel’s Next Appearance In The MCU Should Be Solo

Ms. Marvel has only had two appearances in the MCU, and only one solo. The character is being established as a leader among her peers, but is still a freshly minted hero that hasn’t yet earned her metaphorical stripes. There’s an opportunity for Ms. Marvel season 2 to explore the full potential of Kamala’s powers, especially given The Marvels‘ development wherein Kamala gained access to the second Quantum Band.

The team-up with Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) was inevitable and boosts Ms. Marvel’s credentials quite a bit. However, the dynamic established between Kamala, Carol Danvers, and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) was one of literal hero-worship; a teenager looking up to her role-model. For Ms. Marvel to become leader of the Young Avengers, the New Jersey heroine first needs some time to develop as a hero of her own, in her own corner of the world.

What A Potential Season 2 Of Ms. Marvel Could Look Like

Kamala Khan making a fist with Bruno in Ms. Marvel

Ms. Marvel season 2 would have a tall order to fill in terms of further developing its title hero, as well as establishing larger connections to the MCU as a whole. The season would need to thoroughly explore Ms. Marvel’s powers and how the addition of the second Quantum Band strengthens her, for one. Meanwhile, with the X-Men tease in The Marvels’ post-credits scene and guaranteed further exploration of mutants in Deadpool & Wolverine, Kamala’s X-Gene needs to be explained.

Aside from establishing the Young Avengers team and potential X-Men tie-ins, the show needs to maintain and build on what made season 1 so special. Ms. Marvel was a labor of love from its creator and head writer, Bisha K. Ali, in terms of South Asian and Muslim American representation. Kamala’s family and friends, her place in the world, the conflict between her superhero identity and her life as a teenager — these are the things that make Ms. Marvel such a unique and wonderful show, and all things a sequel season should draw from to continue the series onwards.
