Marvel’s Thor Writer Teases The Return Of Throg!

Marvel’s Thor Writer Teases The Return Of Throg!

Something big is coming to Marvel Comics’ Thor series from Donny Cates. It will be bigger than Thor becoming the Herald of Galactus, and even bigger than the rules of worthiness changing for the God of Thunder’s hammer. While Donny Cates has brought back Beta Ray Bill to the series, and will soon bring back Donald Blake, Thor’s old human persona, everything that’s happened so far pales in comparison to Cates’ latest tease on social media: the Mighty Throg will soon make a return to the Marvel Universe!

For fans that might not know, Throg is one of the best characters in the Thor mythos. In 1986, Marvel writer Walter Simonson created a tale where Loki turned Thor into a frog on Earth. During this time, Thor became involved in a large scale war between the frog and rat armies of Central Park. While Thor was eventually restored to his human form at the end of the story, it was revealed years later that one of the frogs he allied himself with, named Puddlegulp, found a sliver of Mjolnir. The sliver turned itself into a small, frog-sized hammer which turned the brave and worthy amphibian into the Mighty Throg, the Frog of Thunder. Puddlegulp received all of the abilities of the original Thor, albeit on a smaller, more frog-like scale. Furthermore, it should be noted that Puddlegulp used to be a man himself by the name of Simon Walterson (a pun on the original Throg story creator) who got turned into his frog form by a mystic. As such, Puddlegulp still retained all of his memories as Walterson.

While Throg has made some minor appearances since along with the Pet Avengers and even in the War of the Realms event, Donny Cates just revealed on Twitter that the latest Thor script he’s been writing involves Throg’s return! Since his tweet was posted on October 2nd, Cates’ post has gained almost 4000 likes, saying:

This new THOR script I’m writing is maybe my favorite thing I’ve written at Marvel in a long time.

Who knew writing a frog would be so much fun

Die-hard fans of Thor will no doubt be incredibly excited to learn just how Throg will reunite with the new King of Asgard. The last fans saw of Throg, he had been in space with the Asgardians of the Galaxy before they were called back to Earth to assist in the War of the Realms against Malekith’s forces. However, when Throg returned to his croaking brethren in Central Park, he tragically discovered that they had all been slain. Fueled by the desire to avenge his people, the Frog of Thunder rejoined his fellow team members with a renewed determination. However, an unfortunate strike from one of Malekith’s forces sent Throg flying away from the battle, with the rest of the team believing him to have died. However, the final issue of Asgardians of the Galaxy revealed that Throg survived, having found a new colony of frogs to protect.

Supposedly, this is where Throg has been since, so it will be interesting to see how his path will cross with Thor in upcoming issues. Will Thor call upon Throg for aid to fight with him against the dark future he’s seen? Will Throg even accept, considering the massacre that happened that last time he left? Who knew there could be such drama for a frog? One thing’s for sure: it’s not easy being green, especially when the powers of Thor are involved.
