Marvel’s Squirrel Girl Could Be The MCU’s Secret Weapon

Marvel’s Squirrel Girl Could Be The MCU’s Secret Weapon

Fans who found the Marvel universe through movies, rather than comics, might not know who Squirrel Girl is… but this underrated superhero is coming to the MCU, and may well turn out to be Marvel’s secret weapon against Thanos in Infinity War!

Doreen Green made her first appearance in the early 90s, and has often been something of a joke within the Marvel universe. She has the power to talk to squirrels, as well as the agility of a squirrel, fast-growing front teeth, and an actual tail… so it’s easy to see why she may not be taken quite as seriously as she would like. Squirrel Girl is also a college student who is all about being kind – she’s not the beat ’em up kind of superhero, preferring to talk people down instead.

Despite her joke status, Squirrel Girl has a dedicated following, and it looks like she is going to be making it to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the upcoming New Warriors series. Milana Vayntrub has been cast to play Doreen in New Warriors, but the future of the series is currently up in the air, as Freeform decided to drop it a couple of months ago.  Should Squirrel Girl join the larger MCU, however, she could well be the perfect weapon against Thanos… after all, she’s taken him (and several other super villains) down in the comics!

Squirrel Girl’s Track Record

Marvel’s Squirrel Girl Could Be The MCU’s Secret Weapon

That’s right, the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl lives up to her name, and has beaten some of the biggest names in the Marvel universe. She took on Galactus back in Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #4, when she learned that the devourer of planets was headed to Earth, and couldn’t find any of her Avenger friends to help her out. Never one to back down when the world needs saving, Squirrel Girl stole some Stark tech and sped into outer space to deal with this massive threat… and she did. Galactus and Squirrel Girl had a great talk, and he decided to leave Earth alone, allowing Doreen Green to get back to class.

Squirrel Girl has also taken down Doctor Doom with an army of squirrels (a favorite method of attack for her), Kraven the Hunter (more squirrels), Thanos (in an unspecified way, but we can assume army of squirrels), and in the most recent issues of Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, she (with a little help from Loki) took out Dormammu with an army of ghost squirrels. Now, she’s about to kick some Silver Surfer butt, as she accidentally picked a fight with the real Silver Surfer while dealing with an impostor. We won’t know how this turns out until the next issue, but given her track record, it’s safe to say that the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl will remain Unbeatable.

Squirrel Girl And The Power Of Kindness

Squirrel Girl vs Silver Surfer

One of the most impressive things about Squirrel Girl isn’t necessarily her army of squirrels, though. It’s that she has the knack of befriending the villains that she beats, and occasionally even taking them down with the power of kindness… which is how she dealt with Galactus, and means that she’s now essentially on first name terms with one of the most powerful villains in the Marvel universe. Kraven the Hunter has also become a friend to Squirrel Girl, and Doctor Doom tolerates her to the point that she has previously swanned into his lair to take his time machine, and he didn’t even bother to try and stop her. This isn’t just a hero who can take down the biggest bads, but who can turn them into allies along the way.

Marvel’s Most Underrated Hero

With a track record like hers, and an appearance in the MCU (assuming the New Warriors finds a new home), could Squirrel Girl be Marvel’s secret weapon in Infinity War? She’s taken down Thanos in the past, and fans of the character would love to see her given the credit she deserves.

However, that’s not particularly likely. Not only is New Warriors currently looking for a home, but the TV side of the MCU hasn’t historically had too much crossover with the big screen. The links are limited mostly to references and comments, with a few characters going from movie to TV in Agents of SHIELD, but none having yet made it in the other direction. Infinity War is also a two-parter that the MCU has been building towards for years, and promises to be an absolutely epic (and massive) team-up movie. Tossing the ridiculously capable Squirrel Girl into the mix to win the final battle would be a great move for fans of this hero, but would be an incredibly frustrating way to end Infinity War for everyone else watching. Eventually, Squirrel Girl may get the chance to flex her impressive  muscles on the big screen, but it won’t be happening any time soon.
