Your favorite friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is about to see a resurgence. After two relatively disappointing installments in Sony’s Amazing Spider-Man franchise, Sony struck an unprecedented deal with Marvel that led to Peter Parker (Tom Holland) making his MCU debut in Captain America: Civil War. Tom Holland will be swinging his way into theaters for his first solo installment in the MCU next July with Spider-Man: Homecoming, which co-stars Michael Keaton (as the film’s villain), Marisa Tomei (as Aunt May), and Robert Downey Jr. (reprising his role as Tony Stark).
On the television side, Spider-Man has been relatively active in animation for quite some time. Since 2012, Peter Parker has appeared on Disney XD in Ultimate Spider-Man. That series, which is currently airing its fourth season, re-titled, Ultimate Spider-Man vs. the Sinister 6, will end its run in January. But fans of the web-slinger should not fret, as it has been announced that Spider-Man will not be without a solo series for very long.
USA Today is reporting that Marvel will be launching a new Spider-Man series on Disney XD next year. The series, which will see Peter Parker as a superhero in his teenage years, will be simply titled, Marvel’s Spider-Man. Marc Buhaj, a senior vice president, programming and general manager for Disney XD addressed the new series, stating:
“Spider-Man is the biggest action hero in the world. He is an iconic character whose duality makes him both relatable and aspirational for the Disney XD audience. [Marvel’s Spider-Man offers a] fresh take on a beloved classic that will engage both new and existing Spidey fans with its compelling drama, exciting action and the signature sense of comedy.”
The new series will be led by story editor Kevin Shinick (Robot Chicken), who will be joined by supervising director Philip Pignottie (Marvel’s Avengers Assemble), and will see Peter Parker return to his roots. Cort Lane, a senior vice president of Marvel Animation and Family Entertainment added of the series, “The simple title reflects a back-to-basics approach…it’s just filled with heart and humor.“
It looks like Marvel Animation will be following the same path that’s being taken with Spider-Man: Homecoming. That film, a partnership between Sony and Marvel, will follow Peter Parker, who is still in high school, and relatively in his adolescence as a superhero. In fact, Marvel President, Kevin Feige, has indicated that each Spider-Man film may follow another school year, much like Harry Potter. After Ultimate Spider-Man saw Parker team with other web-slingers, S.H.I.E.L.D., and the Avengers, it will be refreshing for fans to see Spider-Man back in his solo element – and no doubt will continue to serve as a role model to adolescents.
