Marvel’s Runaways Set Photos & Video Show Off the Young Heroes

Marvel Television is seemingly everywhere on TV these days. It exists on ABC in the form of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the upcoming Inhumans, among others. FX just scored a winner with Legion, an eye-popping, inventive new series – albeit one that takes place outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Inside the MCU, however, is Netflix’s deep catalog of compelling (and ultimately interconnected) Marvel Television series like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and the upcoming Iron Fist and Defenders.

But even with their already massive and growing list of TV properties, the MCU is not done – not even with streaming services. Hulu will be home to the upcoming Marvel Television series Runaways, which started filming in February. Based on the Marvel Comics series of the same name, the new series follows a group of teenagers as they unite against their parents, who they discover are part of a group of criminal supervillains known as The Pride.

Thanks to a slew of new photos, we now have your first glimpse at the cast of Runaways hard at work on the set. A social media fan account dedicated to actress Danielle Campbell spotted the Originals star on the Runaways set, while star Gregg Sulkin also tweeted out a photo of him reading the Marvel Encyclopedia.

According to MCU Exchange, the Runaways set photos were snapped at Ernest McBride High School in Long Beach, California. Also spotted on the set were actors Sulkin as Chase Stein, Ariela Barer as Gert Yorkes (recognizable with the signature purple hair), and Lyrica Okano as Nico Minoru.

These photos should be nothing less than exciting for fans of the original Runaways comics and those who are intrigued by what the next batch of Marvel Television series has to offer. It’s unclear what kind of tone the show will take, but if these are any indication, it will lean into high school drama. Hopefully the sights of Barer in Yorke’s purple hair and Sulkin looking at a Marvel Comics encyclopedia are signs that Runaways aims to be as faithful as possible to the source material.

As a web series existing on a streaming service, Runaways has a high standard to live up to when it comes to Marvel Television’s output on the medium – especially with its potential connections to the MCU. Netflix has gotten a massive head start with its hugely successful run of superhero shows, and it remains to be seen if Hulu’s entry will measure up to Netflix’s level of quality, although these new set photos are sure to build anticipation for the show’s release.
