Marvel’s Moon Knight Show To Start Filming In March In Budapest

Marvel’s planned Moon Knight series for Disney+ starring Oscar Isaac is set to begin filming this March in Budapest. As Disney+ and the MCU get ready to finally kick off Phase 4 with the release of WandaVision, Moon Knight, often called Marvel’s answer to Batman, is one of the heroes who will help Marvel Studios expand its roster. The Moon Knight series was originally announced in 2019, but it was quite some time until it was revealed Isaac would return to the Disney/Marvel family following roles in the latest Star Wars trilogy and X-Men: Apocalypse.

One of the more unique superheroes in Marvel canon, Marc Spector/Moon Knight is a former boxer, Marine, and mercenary who is struggling with multiple personalities and uses his considerable wealth to fight crime. It’s a series comic fans have been excited about the prospects of for many years. Moon Knight will be run by Egyptian filmmaker Mohamed Diab, and recently it was announced indie directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead will be helming multiple episodes. Now, viewers have a better sense of the show’s timeline and when they can expect it to begin streaming.

The news of Moon Knight‘s production start date was first revealed by THR in an article that also announced the casting of May Calamawy in a mystery role. The series is shooting for a March start in Budapest. As of now, only Isaac and Calamawy have been officially cast in the Moon Knight series, but with filming only two months away, more casting announcements should be forthcoming.

Considering how many film and TV productions have hit continued delays and stoppages while Hollywood continues to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s impressive Marvel Studios has been able to keep the schedule on track and actually begin filming sooner than most people thought possible. By comparison, Bill Hader has said they have two full seasons of his HBO show Barry written, but haven’t been able to start production for almost a year.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has said the Moon Knight series will just be the introduction of the comic character and that they fully expected him, and by extension, Isaac to make appearances in MCU movies going forward. Moon Knight has been confirmed to run for six 40-50 minute episodes during its debut season. Using fellow MCU series Loki and its 18-month production schedule as a guide, one could theoretically see Moon Knight make its debut on Disney+ in the spring or early summer of 2022. Whether or not Moon Knight gets his own film, or continues to make appearances in the MCU à la Hawkeye remains to be seen. Hopefully, the Moon Knight show will provide some answers.
