Marvel’s Justice League Nearly Destroyed The X-Men

Warning! Spoilers for Heroes Reborn: Magneto & The Mutant Force #1 by Marvel Comics below.

In the Heroes Reborn universe, where the Squadron Supreme are the greatest heroes of Earth, the superteam is also responsible for a mutant massacre that decimated the X-Men. In a new preview for Heroes Reborn: Magneto & The Mutant Force #1, the fate of mutants in the new Marvel world is revealed, as a large amount of them were killed – including Charles Xavier – in a deadly fight against Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

The Marvel Universe has been radically changed by unknown forces, as reality has been dramatically rewritten in the Heroes Reborn event. The Avengers are no more, and in their place is the Squadron Supreme, Marvel’s pastiches of the Justice League from the DC Universe. As Hyperion (Superman) has become the planet’s strongest hero, it’s been revealed he also has a thirst for killing. Unlike the Man of Steel, he isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty to stop his opponents. In a new one-shot explaining the X-Men’s role in the Heroes Reborn universe, it’s revealed Hyperion and the Squadron Supreme are responsible for a deadly mutant massacre.

In a brand new preview for Heroes Reborn: Magneto & The Mutant Force #1 (H/T ComicsFX) by Steve Orlando, Bernard Chang, David Curiel, and VC’s Clayton Cowles, a group of mutants led by Magneto are shown breaking Emma Frost out of prison. She tells them she knows their mission is to fight back against the Squadron Supreme. The story flashes back to a fight between the Squadron and X-Men on Capitol Hill, where the mutants protested against a mutant registration act. In that fight, Charles Xavier is killed by Power Princess.

Magneto tells Frost they’ve come to break her out to show the mutant massacre isn’t the end of their race. He says since Charles’ death he’s tried to find and offer sanctuary to the remaining mutants in an effort to restore mutant-kind. The preview ends with Magento revealing he heard Professor X’s voice that gave him new hope.

Solicits suggest Charles Xavier is stuck on the astral plane and the surviving mutants will stage a rescue mission to bring him back to their reality. However, by doing so, they’ll gain the attention of the Squadron Supreme, potentially pitting them against the heroes who nearly massacred their entire race. In this case, it’s hard not the cheer for the mutants, as their quest for independence resulted in near extinction. With new hope and Xavier revealed in the astral plane, for the first time since the deadly massacre, the mutants have hope in the Heroes Reborn universe. Magneto & The Mutant Force #1 is in stores later this week.
