Marvel’s Justice League Is Responsible For A New Mutant Massacre

Warning! Spoilers for Heroes Reborn: Magneto and the Mutant Force #1 below

In a world without the Avengers, the fate of Marvel’s mutants is particularly grim. In the upcoming Heroes Reborn arc that will feature a number of character remixes and origin changes in a brand-new world, mutants will be nearly entirely wiped out and it’s all thanks to Marvel’s Justice League analog, the Squadron Supreme.

Marvel’s upcoming Heroes Reborn arc by Jason Aaron and Ed McGuinness will showcase a completely reborn universe, that has some bold changes to the world readers know. The Squadron Supreme are effectively the Avengers, with Spider-Man being Hyperion’s number one fan. Meanwhile, Thor is a hard-drinking Athiest, Tony Stark was never trapped in a cave, Captain America was never freed from ice, and Black Widow became a villain. Familiar characters have all-new origins, as Miles Morales became the Falcon, Doctor Doom becomes Doctor Juggernaut, and Thanos wields Infinity Rings, not Infinity Stones. The only hero who remembers the main Marvel timeline before the changes will be Blade, the last living Vampire.

Marvel Comics revealed a handful of new one-shots for Heroes Reborn, with Heroes Reborn: Magneto and the Mutant Force #1 by Steve Orlando and Bernard Chang revealing the tragic fates of mutants in the new universe. Previews tease that a mutant massacre occured years ago after mutants pushed for their own independence against the Squadron Supreme. The massacre is said to have left mutantkind “forever wounded,” and led to the death of Charles Xavier. However, Magneto will discover that Xavier is still alive on the astral plane and will lead a rescue mission to bring him back. Here’s the teaser image courtesy of AIPTComics.com

The one-shot’s reveal that the Squadron Supreme helped nearly eliminate mutants entirely brings up a few questions. Did the mutants act with violence in seeking independence, forcing the superteam to fight back? Or, does the Squadron Supreme still have some of their villainous traits and tried to eliminate mutants for their own gains? The heroes of the Squadron Supreme were conceived as evil patchies of DC’s Justice League icons, so it’s possible that they’re not fully refromed in this new universe.

Magneto and the remaining mutants are in tough as they will fight the Squadron Supreme again in an effort to save Charles Xavier from the astral plane in the brand-new one-shot. Can they save the longtime X-Men leader and restore hope to all mutantkind? Readers will find out when Heroes Reborn: Magneto and the Mutant Force #1 comes to comic book stores on May 12, 2021.
