Marvel’s Judgment Day is Exactly What the X-Men Needed for Krakoa to Survive

Warning: Major spoilers for Judgment Day #6 aheadThe X-Men legacy hero Wolverine has been vocal about his distrust of the Krakoan Utopia since the mutant nation was founded in 2019, and the recent X-Force #33 confirms that Logan firmly believes the events of Judgment Day were necessary for Krakoa’s survival and future.

Wolverine played an integral role in the events of Judgment Day, with Logan not only being a major part of Krakoa’s counter-attack against the Eternals’ assault, but also joining his Eternals and Avengers peers in their infiltration of the Celestial Progenitor, a trip that eventually helped to save all of Earth. Logan has sustained perhaps more trauma than any other hero in the Marvel Universe, which has made him a hyper aware and vigilant man. It is this vigilance that he found lacking on Krakoa, which Judgment Day has now solved.

Judgment Day is forcing the entire Marvel Universe to change, and although most everything was returned to normal by the Progenitor at the end, the memories of billions dying and many heroes failing a test of their worth, live on within everyone, and will continue to impact them for years to come. Since his days as an escapee from the Weapon X program, Wolverine has been forced to be ever vigilant, spurned on by spontaneous assaults by Sabretooth and other enemies, and because of this he has admitted before that he was never comfortable with the Utopian “promise” of Krakoa. Wolverine has always believed that just like Genosha and the X-Men’s former island home called Utopia, as well as the Xavier School, Krakoa will always inevitably end. However, a major part of that ending will have to do with the “numbing” mutantkind has experienced since the Krakoan Age began. After Logan’s brutal battle with Kraven the Hunter in X-Force #33 – written by Benjamin Percy with art by Robert Gill and color by Guru Efx – Wolverine officially confirms his perspective on this, reflecting, “The Progenitor’s judgment… might have just been the kick in the ass everyone needed.”

Logan Has Always Been Wary Of Krakoa’s Utopian Vision

Logan goes on to say that the Progenitor’s judgment, and its swift destruction of the entire island of Krakoa, has helped mutants and the Quiet Council realize that their “paradise” could be taken away from them any day. Wolverine even harshly states, “Go ahead and weep for what you’ve learned, mutants. I’m glad to see your tears.” Although Krakoa has been beset by crisis after crisis, like X of Swords and Inferno, the general mutant population has still been told that Krakoa is a land of peace, prosperity, and freedom, a clear lie that Wolverine believes has led to him and many other Krakoan citizens becoming soft and weak. An early example of this was when Logan was lulled into a false sense of security by who he thought was a mutant woman, but instead turned out to be an agent of Orchis who used Wolverine and X-Force to kidnap several mutant children. With Orchis’ politics and views on mutants becoming even more popular and widespread post-Judgment Day, Wolverine is entirely correct in his belief that now more than ever, the mutants of Krakoa need to be keeping a vigilant eye on threats both internal and external. Logan is a brave man, who has been able to set aside his “lone wolf” attitude to coexist happily on Krakoa, even gaining an intimate community with Scott and Jean as well as his “Snikt” family, but Krakoa’s future needs the paranoid, vigilant Wolverine going forward.

Judgment Day was a horrifying and devastating worldwide assault, but now that the Progenitor has mainly reset everything to before its judgment, it is up to the X-Men and the leaders on the Quiet Council to decide how the event will impact them in the days to come, hopefully remaining vigilant at Wolverine’s suggestion, and strengthening their resolve to pull through as a community before the upcoming Fall of X event.
