Marvel’s Forgotten Captain Marvel is Returning To Its Universe

Warning: spoilers ahead for Captain Marvel #35!

The forgotten Captain Marvel, Genis-Vell, has made his grand return to the Marvel Universe. In Captain Marvel #35, part four of “The Last of the Marvels,” Captain Marvels, past and present, come together for an epic final battle against the evil Vox Supreme, and during the course of the fighting, Genis-Vell makes his surprising return—with a promise of more to come.

Several different characters have borne the name Captain Marvel. Most fans are familiar with the first, Mar-Vell as well as Carol Danvers and Monica Rambeau. Genis-Vell was also, for a brief period, Captain Marvel as well. The son of Mar-Vell, Genis made his debut in 1993’s Silver Surfer Annual #8, originally under the name “Legacy.” He would go on to star in a handful of solo titles from the mid-1990s to the early 2000’s, including two notable runs written by Peter David, all under the Captain Marvel title. After the conclusion of Genis’ solo title, he joined the Thunderbolts, but was seemingly killed shortly thereafter. The character has been absent from the Marvel Universe for nearly 15 years and has now returned in time to aid the current Captain Marvel and her allies against Vox Supreme. The issue is written by Kelly Thompson, with art by Sergio Davila, inks by Sean Parsons, and colors by Jesus Aburtov.

Vox Supreme has been kidnapping former Captain Marvels, encasing them in black suits, and forcing them to do his bidding. He had tried twice to imprison Carol, but she freed herself both times. Now Captain Marvel, Phyla-Vell, and Ms. Marvel find themselves facing an army of Vox Supreme’s black-suited “Marvels.” Captain Marvel is able to free the prisoners from Vox Supreme’s control and among his captives is Genis-Vell. As Captain Marvel talks to the survivors, she makes her way to Genis. He is clearly disoriented and confused, not even knowing his own name. Captain Marvel reminds Genis of who he is and tells him she is happy he is back. Genis’ memories are still fuzzy, but he has assurances from Captain Marvel that she will help; an editor’s note reveals there are plans for Genis later this year.

Marvel’s Forgotten Captain Marvel is Returning To Its Universe

“The Last of the Marvels” has been an epic celebration of all who have held the name Captain Marvel. The story has brought them all together, united against a common foe with ties to their pasts. It is only fitting that Genis-Vell, who once was Captain Marvel but has been relegated to limbo for the last 15 years, would make his return as well. His brief appearance in this issue raises many questions and answers none, but Marvel has promised Genis’ story is far from over. How did he return in the first place, and how did he come under Vox Supreme’s influence? Was Vox behind his return? Genis-Vell’s return could have huge implications for the current Captain Marvel. He has a direct connection to the name, carrying it once himself. Carol ascended to the role in his absence—how will he view this? Will he fight alongside her? Or might he view her as a usurper?

The forgotten Captain Marvel, Genis-Vell, has returned to the Marvel Universe. Time will tell if the current Marvel has gained an ally—or an enemy.
