Marvel’s Captain America Virginity Reveal Hurts Steve & Peggy’s Romance

Captain America was not a virgin in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but She-Hulk: Attorney At Law‘s reveal hurts Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter’s romance. For almost the entirety of Captain America’s journey in the MCU, his love of Peggy was a defining part of his character. Between carrying a picture of her in a compass at all times to spending time with her as an elderly woman, Steve’s love was clear. The nearly 70 years they spent apart complicated matters, though, including leaving a question about if Captain America was a virgin.

There has long been a debate about Steve Rogers’ virginity, but She-Hulk officially revealed the truth. Jennifer Walters is obsessed with Captain America, his now infamous butt, and his sex life, and she repeatedly pesters Bruce Banner for information about him. She-Hulk episode 1’s post-credits scene continues this, as Jen laments the idea that someone as good-looking as Steve Rogers may have died (or at least grown old) without experiencing sex. That is when Hulk and the MCU confirm Captain America was not a virgin. It’s a major revelation about Steve’s past, as he lost his virginity to a girl in 1943 on the USO tour. While it allowed for some very funny scenes, it was the wrong reveal for the MCU and Captain America.

The idea of Captain America not being a virgin is not bad in and of itself. However, the how and when it happened ultimately hurts Steve and Peggy’s MCU romance. Captain America losing his virginity to a USO girl in 1943 means that he did so while very clearly having strong feelings for Peggy. They had yet to act on them at this point, but their interest in one another was quite obvious. It was not long after Steve lost his virginity that Peggy caught him kissing Private Lorraine. Just kissing another girl felt wrong at the moment and resulted in Peggy shooting a gun at Steve. Now, the idea that Captain America had a one-night stand to lose his virginity makes it seem as though he was not as singularly focused on Peggy as the MCU previously implied. It also makes Steve’s question about if Peggy and Howard Stark were “fondue-ing” (having sex) seem hypocritical.

Captain America Should Have Been A Virgin (& Chris Evans Agrees)

Based on Captain America’s MCU story as it was already shown, Steve Rogers being a virgin makes much more sense. Before becoming a super soldier, Steve was not actively pursuing a romance. He would ditch dates in favor of trying to sneak his way onto the army. Skinny Steve also mostly lacked the confidence even to try and talk to a girl, with Bucky having to trick him into going on double dates. Since he would not have lost his virginity before meeting Peggy Carter, it would have been more in line with his character for Steve to have wanted to save himself for his dream girl.

Kevin Feige may have given the approval for She-Hulk: Attorney At Law‘s Captain America virginity reveal, but the reveal flies in the face of what Chris Evans thought of his character. Back in 2015 while promoting Avengers: Age of Ultron, Evans talked about the likelihood that Steve was a virgin. EW suggested that he could have lost his virginity during the USO tour, and while Evans joked that one of the girls could have “blew his mind,” that is not what he thought would have happened. The Captain America actor said, “He’s probably just a good guy. He was probably holding out for Peggy Carter and he’s probably a little more old-fashioned in that sense.” Perhaps the MCU should have taken Captain America’s thoughts into consideration.
