Marvel’s Avengers Teases New Content & Roadmap For 2022

A Crystal Dynamics developer has promised more DLC content will be coming to Marvel’s Avengers in 2022. Despite a lukewarm initial reception and controversy over Marvel’s Avengers’ microtransactions, Crystal Dynamics has been adding new missions and playable characters to its team-based action-RPG title since its release in 2020, introducing cosmetics such as alternate costumes pulled from the comics and MCU movies, as well as the highly-anticipated Black Panther: War For Wakanda expansion.

Just last month, Marvel’s Avengers players finally saw the long-teased arrival of Spider-Man, added to the game’s roster of playable heroes as a PlayStation-exclusive character. Unlike past post-release heroes like Hawkeye and Black Panther, his story is told through smaller missions and unlockable audio files instead of a full-fledged campaign. November also saw the release of the Klaw Raid: Discordant Sound mission, which tasked players with completing challenging puzzles and fending off waves of enemies to stop Klaw’s latest effort to destroy Marvel’s Avengers Wakanda.

As shown in a post by Reddit user LyricsMode (via CBR), Crystal Senior Brand Manager Nick Edwards has stated that Crystal Dynamics has no intention of stopping its support for Marvel’s Avengers after the release of Klaw Raid last month. While the developer didn’t specify what exactly will be added in 2022, Edwards went on to express that the development team is excited to reveal what it has been working on for Marvel’s Avengers, and that there is indeed further content planned for 2022. Edwards said:

“If the core question is: Will there be content in 2022 after this roadmap? Yes. There is not currently any version of any internal plan where we stop updates at the end of the current roadmap […] There’s a plan, the team is excited to share it with everyone when the work is further along, and people will be working on that future content as soon as they’re done making the current roadmap’s content.”

These statements were made in response to a comment by Game Director Phil Therien during a livestream, which implied that Crystal Dynamics is still working on new Marvel’s Avengers content.

Since its launch last year, Marvel’s Avengers has struggled to achieve the level of success garnered by other comic book-based games like Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham series and Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man. Publisher Square Enix reported a net loss during the period that Marvel’s Avengers first launched, and Crystal Dynamics faced a wave of controversy surrounding in-game add-ons, removing paid boosters from the game following accusations that its microtransactions created a pay-to-win scenario for players. However, things might be looking up for Earth’s mightiest heroes, as the recent addition of Spider-Man to Marvel’s Avengers has been met with praise despite the initial misgivings about him only being available on PlayStation consoles.

It still isn’t clear exactly what new content Crystal Dynamics is going to add to Marvel’s Avengers in the coming year, though previous leaks have teased what may be on the cards. Rumors suggest heroes like War Machine and Dr. Strange could come to Marvel’s Avengers in the future, and with near-countless crossovers possible, the game’s future could be a bright one. Whatever the case may be, Crystal Dynamics’ confirmation reaffirms the developer has no intention of slowing down support for Marvel’s Avengers.
