2016 has been jam-packed with superhero battles, with many of them seeing heroes fighting against each other. It kicked off with Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, before Marvel entered the fray and had the Avengers come to blows in Captain America: Civil War. Even the recent Arrowverse crossover saw The Flash and Green Arrow forced to duke it out with Supergirl and the Legends. As much fun as it is to see superheroes forced to battle their friends, it's even more fun when you and your friends can force superheroes to battle. While Super Smash Bros. lets you pit Link against Pikachu, the Marvel vs. Capcom series is still the industry leader when it comes to superhero (and villain) fighting games.
That's why it was so exciting when word came that there would be a new installment of the classic franchise, and just yesterday we got the official trailer for Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite. In the trailer, we saw Ryu from Street Fighter and Mega Man from, well, Mega Man throw down against Iron Man and Captain Marvel. Not only was it super exciting to see the Capcom veterans face off against Old Shellhead, but it was great to see the game push Captain Marvel to the fore (who will be joining the MCU in just a few short years).
Now, thanks to Marvel, we've got our first look at the gameplay of the newest installment in the series. In it, the Infinity Stones alluded to in the subtitle get shown in action.

With the powerful gems already playing such a crucial role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it's fun to see both sets of heroes harness the power of the individual Infinity Stones to amp up their threat. In the trailer, we see Ryu activate the Power Stone, considerably boosting his strength and energy blasts. We then see Captain Marvel using the Time Stone to teleport around the stage (which seems like that should be the Space Stone's thing) before going full Binary on the Street Fighter.
The game isn't set to come out until late 2017, so it's likely this will be all we see for a while as both Marvel and Capcom will want to save some character and gameplay reveals for the coming months. If they need any ideas, we've already laid out all the characters we hope you can play as in the game when it eventually comes out. Until then, it's exciting to see a bit more of these four fighters and two of the gems you can use in the game.
Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite will be released on PC, PS4, and Xbox One in late 2017.
