Marvel Reveals The New Sorcerer Supreme

Marvel Reveals The New Sorcerer Supreme

Warning! Spoilers for Avengers #37 below!

Marvel has a new Sorcerer Supreme – at least temporarily. With Moon Knight helping to steal the powers of multiple Avengers in an effort to take down Mephisto and aide the rise of the Egyptian moon God Khonshu, those powers have been redistributed giving Blade the stolen ability taken from Doctor Strange.

The Avengers’ latest threat has come from one of their longtime allies, as Moon Knight has stolen powers from the Avengers in an effort to stop Mephisto. However, after seeing Khonshu’s attempted takeover, Moon Knight turned on him and acquired the powers of the Phoenix Force to fight back against the God who gave him his powers. With Khonshu possessing Ankh necklaces that contain the powers of Iron Fist, Doctor Strange, and other heroes, his attempts at overthrowing the Avengers stall when the superteam steals the mystical pendants themselves.

In Avengers #37 by Jason Aaron, Javier Garron, Jason Keith, and VC’s Cory Petit, Black Panther and Ghost Rider manage to take the Ankh’s after Robbie Reyes unleashes a fury of fire at the moon God. With mummies attacking the rest of the Avengers, Black Panther gives both Blade and She-Hulk a temporary upgrade, handing them the necklaces. She-Hulk gets Iron Fist’s abilities and becomes the Iron Hulk, while Blade gets the Mystic Arts of the Sorcerer Supreme.

Marvel Reveals The New Sorcerer Supreme

Blade’s time as the new Sorcerer Supreme doesn’t last particularly long, but he did get to use his new magical spells to take down a horde of mummies with She-Hulk by his side. It’s a shame, because Blade is such a badass character, and seeing him with new abilities is a lot of fun, even if it’s for a single panel. If the vampire hunter was also given the powers of Doctor Strange, he’d easily become one of the most feared Avengers ever – as even before the upgrade, he was a force to be reckoned with.

Alas, Blade as Sorcerer Supreme is shortlived. In true Blade fashion, he kicks a lot of undead butt while channeling the stolen powers of Doctor Strange. Ultimately, the magical enhancement helps the Avengers take down Khonshu’s army. Meanwhile, Moon Knight is left powerless and the stolen abilities are assumedly returned to those who originated them. It’s too bad he didn’t keep the upgrade, because Blade having the powers of Doctor Strange would have made for a great mini-arc for the character.
