Marvel Reveals Spider-Man’s New Codename & Costume as SPIDER-GOBLIN

Marvel has just unveiled a new codename and costume for its most popular hero, as Spider-Man becomes the Spider-Goblin. The animosity between Peter Parker and Norman Osborn’s Green Goblin is one of the most infamous hero-villain rivalries in comic history. After killing Gwen Stacy in one of Spider-Man’s most important stories, Osborn singlehandedly manages to push the Webhead over the edge, with Peter actually vowing to avenge her by killing the Goblin. Now, the two are about to merge in a frightening new look that will see Peter become the Goblin himself.

According to the official Spider-Man account on X, the dawn of Peter Parker as the Spider-Goblin will take place in Zeb Wells, Ed McGuinness and Todd Nauck’s The Amazing Spider-Man #53. Spider-Man’s new look fits the mold of the Green Goblin’s design, with his pointed cap, green face, purple clothes and sharp glider that has made the villain iconic for decades. However, the costume is accented with some of Spider-Man’s most significant designs, including web lining along the arms and legs, as well as a spider logo on his back. It’s a total mashup of hero and villain, and it’s something that could spell trouble for the villains caught in his web.

The upcoming Spider-Goblin arc is expected to begin with The Amazing Spider-Man #50. That issue features the return of Norman Osborn as the Green Goblin before the new spider-sona officially makes his debut in The Amazing Spider-Man #53 later this summer.

The Spider-Goblin Will Continue Peter’s Darkest Story Yet

Of course, this won’t be the first time that Peter Parker and the Goblin have collided into one entity. In the past year, Peter became a nightmare for his villains after being injected with the sins of Norman Osborn, turning Spidey into a variation of the Green Goblin himself. Spider-Man was eventually freed from Norman’s burden and the evils of Osborn’s past found their way back to the original Goblin, putting an end to Norman’s hero days. However, it’s clear that this upcoming storyline will serve as the ultimate climax to Peter’s darkest story. Not only will he have to face the monster he became in recent issues, but he’ll also find himself becoming the Goblin once again not too long after. What’s especially interesting is how his return to the glider will fare now that he’s no longer under the influence of Norman Osborn’s sins.

The Amazing Spider-Man Could Pull A Page From The Marvel’s Spider-Man PlayStation Games

While first impressions suggest that Peter will turn evil once again, it’s entirely possible that the artwork could be a misdirection. Instead, Peter could potentially use his new look to combat the return of his greatest foe. It’s currently unknown if Osborn will be defeated shortly after returning in The Amazing Spider-Man #50, so Peter may create this new suit as a last-ditch effort to counter his enemy’s power. Fans of the Marvel’s Spider-Man video game may find this familiar, as the finale of the original game ended with Peter creating a new suit made from Doctor Octopus’ arms to level the battlefield. The Spider-Goblin could be similar to this as the Webhead realizes Norman’s strength is too great and crafts a suit that will help him.

This is undoubtedly a long-shot theory, but it would serve as a fitting conclusion to Peter’s villain arc. The Wall-Crawler’s most recent series has seen him grappling with heartache, balancing out his dark side, and making amends with a former enemy. Now, all of this is set to come crashing down, and the creation of the Spider-Goblin would be a perfect way for Marvel to put Spider-Man‘s darkest story behind him and let him face his demons head-on.
