Marvel Reveals Odin As The Last Of The Ancient Avengers

Marvel Reveals Odin As The Last Of The Ancient Avengers

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Avengers #750

In a new preview for the Avengers 750th legacy issue, the end has come for the Ancient Avengers of 1,000,000 B.C., leaving the All-Father Odin as the last surviving member of the first version of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. While the preview teases the team’s defeat after a major attack, it certainly seems as though the former King of Asgard will be seeking to avenge his allies who protected the Earth at the dawn of time.

Created by Jason Aaron, the Ancient Avengers were the earliest keepers of the Marvel Universe’s primordial powers that have existed for centuries. Brought together by the Earth’s first Phoenix, Odin was recruited when he was the wielder of the still unruly Mjolnir along with the first Black Panther, Iron Fist, Ghost Rider, Sorcerer Supreme, and Starbrand. Having faced dark threats such as a deranged Celestial and Kid Thanos, the first iteration of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are a force to be reckoned with, and even teamed up with a time-dispaced Iron Man in recent issues.

Avengers #750 will be an anthology of stories celebrating the greatest team of heroes in the Marvel Universe, coming from Jason Aaron, Christopher Ruocchio, Aaron Kuder, Ed McGuinness, and more. In the recently released preview for the issue, the deaths of the Ancient Avengers are revealed as Odin laments the loss of his fallen allies, swearing vengeance for them. Here are the preview pages for the story and the synopsis for the upcoming issue:

Interestingly enough, it seems as though some of these prehistoric Avengers – such as the Phoenix and Iron Fist –  were newer guardians who inherited the primordial powers of their first keepers, an indication that this hasn’t been the first time Odin has lost teammates on the Ancient Avengers. This begs the question: how long did Odin endure the grief of losing allies before the All-Father eventually quit the team altogether?

In any case, the synopsis teases that the true purpose of the Ancient Avengers will be revealed in this upcoming issue, which should prove to be interesting. In Odin’s case, it’s likely that he’ll soon become disenchanted by the idea of being an Avenger, returning to Asgard as its king and granting his future son, Thor, his hammer before the God of Thunder would become an Avenger himself in the modern era. The full Avengers #750 releases December 1st.
