Marvel Comics has revealed a new design for Moon Knight, as well as other heroes such as Sentry, and Nova in the Heroes Reborn universe. In a world without the Avengers, Moon Knight is part of Norman Osborn’s Dark Squadron, a superhero team created by the villain in order to show the world he had what it takes to run for President of the United States.
Both heroes and villains alike have changed drastically in the Heroes Reborn universe. In the reality, which was created by Agent Coulson and Mephisto, the Avengers don’t exist, as the Squadron Supreme is the most powerful superteam in the galaxy. The squad is led by Hyperion, Marvel’s pastiche of Superman, who’s used his violent tactics to achieve his goal of being the most beloved hero in the changed universe. Unfortunately for the Squadron Supreme, Blade has brought the Avengers team back together, just as cracks in the reality are becoming more and more apparent.
Heroes Reborn #7 by Jason Aaron, Aaron Kuder, and Dean White, deals with the Squadron Supreme discovering the Avengers are being reformed. After checking out the arctic and seeing Captain America had been unthawed and not being able to find the Star Brand in space, the group pays a visit to Norman Osborn to ask about Echo. Osborn is a prisoner at Ravencroft where Echo was also held before joining the Avengers. After Power Princess kills Osborn for taunting her about the death of her fellow Utopians, the story flashes back to the Squadron Supreme meeting Osborn. It’s there, he announces he’s running for president and introduces the Dark Squadron.
The Dark Squadron – which is based on the Dark Avengers in 616-continuity – features a powerful team of heroes, including Moon Knight, Nova, Sentry, the Ghost Runner, and Valkyrie. Most notably, Moon Knight sports a black costume, with only white accents. It’s the opposite of his usual all-white look. Meanwhile, the Sentry looks almost Kryptonian with a giant S on his belt. Lastly, Nova appears to be almost robotic, with a completely new color scheme.
For readers wondering where Moon Knight, Sentry, and other powerful heroes were during the Heroes Reborn event, they finally have an answer: they were part of Norman Osborn’s Dark Squadron in his failed attempt to become president. It’s too bad the new Moon Knight and the other heroes’ appearance in the story is just limited to the small cameo because the new costumes make them instantly intriguing. It would have been a lot of fun to see the team go on a mission and see if their powers were different from their usual versions. Heroes Reborn #7 is in stores now.
