Marvel Officially Has A New HYDRA Successor To Worry About

Warning: spoilers ahead for Amazing Spider-Man #92.Bey!

The heroes of the Marvel Universe have a new successor to HYDRA: The Beyond Corporation. The Beyond Corporation is one of the most sinister agencies in the Marvel Universe and in Amazing Spider-Man #92.Bey, readers learn that Monica Rambeau, the former Captain Marvel, has tried three times now to destroy Beyond to no avail. The company’s ability to return from nothing makes them Marvel’s successor to HYRDA.

Although it may appear as simply another company in the Marvel Universe, the Beyond Corporation is actually a front organization for immensely powerful beings from outside the universe. The group first appeared in 2006’s Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E #1, moving a select group of heroes, including Monica Rambeau, from Earth-616 to another Earth in the multiverse. The Beyond Corporation tampered with the heroes’ minds, tricking them into living out whole new lives—all for the Beyond Corporation’s amusement. Later, the beings responsible for Beyond would possess human Jason Quantrell and turning him into their avatar; only the sacrifice of the Blue Marvel’s son stopped him. Now, the Beyond Corporation has returned, bankrolling Ben Reilly and making him a corporate Spider-Man; it has become apparent that the Beyond Corporation is up their old tricks, and Monica Rambeau has had enough—but will she able to stop them. Amazing Spider-Man #92.Bey is written by Jed MacKay, Cody Ziglar and Zeb Wells, illustrated by Luigi Zagaria, Bruno Oliveira, Fran Galan, Mark Bagley and Wayne Faucher, colored by Espen Grundetjern, Carlos Lopez, Jim Campbell, Jim Charalampidis and Morry Hollwell, and lettered by Joe Caramagna.

When Monica Rambeau arrives at the Beyond Corporation’s headquarters, she recounts the various run-ins she has had with Beyond over the years, starting with her time in Nextwave. Readers learn this is Monica’s third time fighting Beyond, and she plans to bring them down for good—leading her to recruit former Nextwave teammate Machine Man.

Marvel Officially Has A New HYDRA Successor To Worry About

On two occasions, the heroes of the Marvel Universe turned back the advances of the Beyond Corporation, and yet the organization returns time and again—much like HYDRA. Both groups have access to fantastic technology and a seemingly endless supply of warm bodies to throw at the heroes, and both can return from defeat. Yet the key difference between HYDRA and the Beyond Corporation is the latter is merely a front for beings from beyond the multiverse, making it much more powerful than HYDRA. HYDRA is bound by the laws of physics and Earthly concerns—none of which trouble the Beyond Corporation.

Given that the Beyond Corporation is immensely more powerful than HYDRA, it stands to reason Monica and the rest of the Marvel Universe will only be successful in stopping the evil company only in the short term. Given the resilience that the Beyond Corporation has shown in the past, it is only a matter of time before Marvel’s HYDRA successor rises again.
