Marvel & Netflix Comic-Con Sizzle Reel: Heroes Among Us

Disney has Marvel Studios dominating box offices with its Marvel Cinematic Universe films, like The Avengers, Captain America: Civil War and upcoming projects such as the Benedict Cumberbatch-starring Doctor Strange. The movies are well and good, but there’s also a whole second tier to the MCU that has been lighting the small screen on fire with the highly acclaimed Netflix original series, like Daredevil and Jessica Jones; not to mention the anticipated debuts of Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders and The Punisher on the way.

Netflix and Marvel are showing off with their lineup of TV shows this week at the most anticipated pop culture event of the year, San Diego Comic-Con. A new sizzle reel video (unveiled during the Luke Cage Comic-Con panel) joins all three of the Hell’s Kitchen-based shows into a cohesive universe for the fans, and offers some looks into the future.

One of the three series that the compilation video highlights  is Daredevil, the series that started this whole trend on Netflix and has already enjoyed two well-received seasons on the streaming service. A third season was expected by viewers, but was officially confirmed at the SDCC panel for the soon to debut Luke Cage series.

Luke Cage is another show highly featured in the reel, and is the only real source of newer material you may not have seen yet. In fact, the official Netflix Marvel TV Luke Cage teaser video (naturally) debuted at the show’s SDCC panel. Luke Cage (Mike Colter) has a story began during the first season of Jessica Jones, the other series shown on the above video, and Cage’s own solo series picks up in the aftermath.

The adult-oriented drama that the Marvel TV series on Netflix are able to provide has filled a gap that the MCU movies just don’t have the time to tackle and that the network television series (like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D) don’t examine either. There is plenty of fun and action in the feature films to be sure, but the street-level everyday heroes that Netflix is bringing to life are a breath of fresh air, something that this video is quick to remind us as we wait impatiently for Daredevil season 3, Jessica Jones season 2, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders and the Daredevil spinoff, The Punisher.

The Punisher was the only character that got very little billing in the sizzle reel, probably because his series isn’t set to debut for awhile. Meanwhile, Iron Fist got his own buzz at SDCC with the debut of the official logo and a teaser trailer for the series. The show follows martial arts master Danny Rand (Finn Jones). The series will debut in 2017, along with the highly anticipated small screen team-up show, The Defenders, which is set to include Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter) and Iron Fist (Finn Jones).
