Marvel Just Changed The Meaning Of We Are Groot

Marvel Just Changed The Meaning Of We Are Groot

Spoilers for Mech Strike: Monster Hunters #5 by Marvel ComicsMarvel Comics just changed the meaning of “We Are Groot” as the popular MCU line from Guardians of the Galaxy gets a new purpose in the pages of Marvel Comics. In Mech Strike: Monster Hunters #5, the Avengers call the phrase to transform Groot into his ultimate form as the cosmic hero gains the powers of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and their mechs to take on Doctor Doom.

In the MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, one of the most iconic moments occurs when Groot sacrifices himself to save his friends, saying, “We Are Groot,” as the giant-sized creature disappears. Groot would later return in his baby and teen form, but the older Groot’s sacrifice is one of the most heartwarming scenes in the entire MCU. Now, Marvel is changing the meaning of “We Are Groot” as the phrase is used as a battle cry to transform Groot’s ultimate form alongside the Avengers, as the hero gets a massive power upgrade.

In Mech Strike Monster Hunters #5 by Christos Gage, Paco Diaz, Juanjo Ramos, Protobunker’s Fer Sifuentes-Sujo, and VC’s Cory Petit from Marvel Comics, the Avengers in their monster mechs battle Doctor Doom, who has absorbed the full power of the Eye of the Kraken. However, the Avengers quickly realize that even with their new power upgrades, they don’t have enough firepower to match up with the darkest version of Doctor Doom, leading Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to call on Groot, as the Guardians of the Galaxy member calls out, “We Are Groot” as he transforms alongside the Avengers.

We Are Groot Has A Different Meaning In The Comics

Marvel Just Changed The Meaning Of We Are Groot

While “We Are Groot” is said before Groot protects his fellow Guardians of the Galaxy heroes from being killed, it’s used differently in the pages of Marvel Comics. Instead, Groot says “We Are Groot” as a battle cry, letting the Avengers know he’s ready to absorb their collective monster powers to transform into a kaiju-sized version of the hero capable of taking down Doctor Doom – which he succeeds at alongside the Avengers.

In Mech Strike Monster Hunters by Marvel Comics, Groot saying “We Are Groot” ultimately has a less emotional meaning and is more used as a way for the Guardians of the Galaxy hero to call on the Avengers to help him take on his ultimate form. Still, seeing the line flipped from its MCU purpose makes for a fun moment as the Avengers and Groot team up to defeat Doctor Doom. Mech Strike: Monster Hunters #5 is in comic book stores now.
