Marvel Confirms MODOK Is Its Most Despicable Villain (Despite His Goofy Appearance)

Warning: contains spoilers for Fall of the House of X #2!While it may come as no surprise to long-time fans, Marvel has confirmed that MODOK is one of its worst villains. The Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing has aligned himself with the anti-mutant faction Orchis in recent months, helping guide them to some horrific victories. Now, with Earth’s mutants making their final stand in Fall of the House of X #2, MODOK has shown just how low he can go.

Fall of the House of X #2 was written by Gerry Duggan and drawn by Lucas Werneck. Some of Earth’s surviving mutants have staged an attack on Orchis’ orbital platform. The X-Men were able to overwhelm the station’s forces. MODOK flees the station, and in a text piece at issue’s end, he tenders his resignation from Orchis.

In his resignation, he reflects on his time culling not only mutants from the gene pool, but also the elderly and infirm.

He also thinks of the various gulags they opened as well, and makes it clear he enjoyed every minute of it.

MODOK May Look Silly, Yet He is Anything But

MODOK Is One of Marvel’s Most Evil Villains

MODOK has a long legacy of evil in the Marvel Universe, first appearing in 1967’s Tales of Suspense #93. Beginning life as a simple human, he was upgraded by Advanced Idea Mechanics to become the ultimate killing machine. With an intellect far beyond most humans, and a complete lack of empathy and emotion, MODOK has distinguished himself as one of Marvel’s most evil villains. He has tangled with Captain America, Iron Man and many others throughout his career.

In recent months, MODOK joined forces with Orchis. The organization, founded in response to the rise of the mutant nation of Krakoa, is a consolidation of numerous evil agencies from around the Marvel Universe. It includes representatives of AIM, former SHIELD agents and many others, all united in one cause: to kill all mutants. However, Orchis has revealed its designs go beyond mutants, and seek the subjugation of the entire human race, a goal that MODOK shares as well. Orchis is remorseless in their pursuit of mutants, and MODOK’s prodigious intellect is an asset.

MYTHOS Modok

And yet when the chips were down, MODOK ran from Orchis, leaving them at the mercy of the X-Men and the Brood. Once the dust settles, he sends a passive-aggressive memo in which he literally laughs at killing mutants, the elderly and the disabled. He cheered on the opening of prisons and concentration camps, many of which were created through legal means. The memo perfectly captures just how vile MODOK is, painting a picture of a creature with no morals and no loyalty to anyone save himself. MODOK has once again proven why he is Marvel’s worst villain.
