Marvel Confirms 2 MCU Avengers Are Its Most Powerful Heroes – But Only When They’re Together

Warning: Contains spoilers for Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver #2!!The Scarlet Witch and her twin brother, Quicksilver, are both incredibly powerful in their own right. Between Wanda’s continuously growing grasp of magic and Pietro’s super speed, they’ve been formidable heroes for years. Yet their unique and often codependent relationship renders them both volatile at times, and now Marvel has revealed that shared connection is the key to extraordinary power…and possibly the destruction of the universe.

In Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver #2 – by Steve Orlando, Lorenzo Tammetta, Frank William, and Joe Caramagna – the Maximoff twins continue to battle the Wizard. The two are currently separated after an intense fight, leaving them both vulnerable to attack – and to the news that their twin is enduring the same. That knowledge prompts Wanda to unleash the power of Chthon and continue a long trend of the Maximoffs doing whatever it takes to save each other.

The Wizard’s mysterious “Imminence” puts that trait into grave terms, calling Scarlet Witch the “Accelerant” while Quicksilver is her “Catalyst”. Together, they’re capable of destroying everything, even space-time.

Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver Change the World for Each Other

A tearful Quicksilver convinces Scarlet Witch to write a new reality so she will not be killed.

Wanda’s choice to unleash Chthon is less alarming than the pattern it fits into. She initially fights the Wizard with a more “standard” magical approach until he brings Pietro’s name into the mix, then chooses to release part of the god within her. It’s a mere hint of what the two are capable of and willing to do for one another. Between Wanda’s reality-altering powers and Pietro’s speed and protective nature, the “Imminence” claiming that they can break multiple realities rings true. Given a reason, both would make that sacrifice for each other, and it wouldn’t be the first time.

House of M is perhaps the most profound example of what they’re capable of together. As Wanda’s powers spiral out of control, Pietro comes up with the idea of creating a new world that will, ultimately, keep his sister safe. It rewrites reality and the resulting fallout causes many mutant deaths and alters the lives of millions of others. In Quicksilver: No Surrender, where Pietro battles monsters that exist outside time, it is Wanda who reaches out to him and convinces him to keep fighting – providing yet another example of what they achieve with each other’s influence.

The Maximoff Twins Must Live or Die Together

Wanda Maximoff is shown with half her face resembling Chthon after the Wizard mentions that Pietro is in danger.

Since birth, Pietro and Wanda have been inextricably tied to each other. Where one goes, the other tends to follow, whether that’s joining the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, becoming an Avenger, or shaping the whole world if it means bringing the other one back. Now, that extends beyond a connection between twins. It is something cosmic and far-reaching, and the Imminence confirms it may affect “all possible realities” and that both must be destroyed. Together, the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are more powerful than the sum of their parts, and time will tell whether that spells doom or salvation.
