Kick-Ass creator Mark Millar is hoping to get in on the comic book/superhero reboot action, via a TV show based on the latest iteration of his DIY costumed hero.
Late last year, Millar announced a new direction for Kick-Ass: a rebooted comic book series starring a black female hero. The latest vigilante to pick up the Kick-Ass mantle, Patience Lee, is a military veteran hailing from New Mexico. When she isn’t fighting crime and saving the day, she’s caring for her two young children. Millar also announced a new Hit-Girl series, co-penned by director and uber comic book nerd, Kevin Smith. The Hit-Girl series features the original Mindy McCready traveling the world and taking out dangerous criminals.

Millar told Yahoo Movies UK that he choose Patience Lee as the star as his reboot because he felt there weren’t enough black heroes and he recognized an opportunity to make a difference in that regard. Millar revealed that the original Kick-Ass, Dave Lizewski, and the rest of the characters surrounding him, are indeed connected to Lee’s universe, so there is potential for crossover. Millar’s hope is to have enough interest sparked in Lee’s story to warrant a television series. Though Kick-Ass was not a part of the sale of Millar’s Millarworld company to Netflix, Millar doesn’t think the idea of a series is too far-fetched. “I think the time is right and the character’s got a lot of goodwill, with Hit-Girl in the same continuity, it would be an awesome TV show,” he said.
Kick-Ass the movie hit theaters in 2010 to rave reviews and went on to enjoy great success on DVD and Blu-ray. The film’s cast have since become bona fide stars in their own right. Hit-Girl actress Chloe Grace Moretz has been busy nabbing starring roles in everything from horror to comedy films. Meanwhile, Dave Lizewski actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson took on a leading role in 2014’s Godzilla before then appearing as Quicksilver in the Marvel Cinematic Universe installment Avengers: Age of Ultron, one year later.
Adding to that star power is the possible inclusion of Thor: Ragnarok‘s Tessa Thompson, who recently expressed her interest in playing Patience Lee in a screen adaptation of Millar’s Kick-Ass comics reboot – an interest that the comic book writer definitely reciprocates. With the potential to attach such promising actors, combined with the comic book industry going strong at the moment, Millar seems to be right on point. The timing is indeed right.
