Mario Party 1 & 2 On Switch Online Has Players Fearing For Their Joy-Cons

Nintendo has announced that Mario Party & Mario Party 2 are coming to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack on November 2, making players fear for their Joy-Cons. It was originally assumed that Mario Party would be one of the Nintendo 64 games ignored by Nintendo Switch Online, thanks to a lawsuit that happened regarding its games.

The Nintendo 64 controller had a single joystick in its center. In Mario Party, there were games like Tug o’ War, Cast Aways, Pedal Power, Paddle Battle, and Deep Sea Divers that involved spinning the stick in order to succeed. A lot of players would spin the stick using the palm of their hand, as this was the optimal way for doing so for a stick with a wide rotation and awkward placement. This turned out to be a very bad design choice on the part of the Mario Party developers, as it led to over a hundred reports of hand wounds. The Nintendo 64 controllers gave people blisters and Nintendo was sued, costing the company $75,000 in legal fees and forcing it to distribute gloves to those with a receipt for the game.

The time for destroying Joy-Cons in Tug ‘War has nearly arrived. The official Nintendo of America YouTube account has announced that Mario Party and Mario Party 2 will be coming to the Nintendo Switch Online’s Expansion Pack on November 2, 2022. People won’t need to gather around their Nintendo Switch as they did with their Nintendo 64 back in the day, as Nintendo Switch Online will allow people to play the Mario Party games using online multiplayer.

Mario Party On Nintendo 64 Was Sued For Its Notorious Joystick Breakers

This marks the first time since launch that multiple games will be added to the Nintendo 64 app of Nintendo Switch Online. There’s a good chance that the Pokémon Stadium games on Nintendo Switch Online will also see a dual release in the future. All of the Mario Party games on Nintendo 64 are beloved by fans (even with their hand-destroying minigames) and they’ll soon be joined by the final entry on the platform, as Mario Party 3 will be arriving in 2023.

It’s unclear if Nintendo will change the joystick spinning games in the Mario Party games on Nintendo Switch Online. The Joy-Con joysticks aren’t as damaging to spin as the Nintendo 64 joystick and their small size means that using a hand to spin them isn’t as optimal as it was in the past. The more worrying concern is that the Mario Party games could lead to Joy-Cons drifting, especially as Nintendo still hasn’t fixed Joy-Con drift, even with the newer iterations of the controller.
