Netflix has saved Manifest for a fourth and final season that will be twenty episodes long. Debuting on NBC in 2018, Manifest aired for three seasons before the network pulled the plug. Manifest was created by Jeff Rake and stars Melissa Roxburgh, Josh Dallas, Athena Karkanis, J.R. Ramirez, Luna Blaise, Jack Messina, Parveen Kaur, Matt Long, and Holly Taylor. The show follows the passengers of Montego Air Flight 828. During a flight from Jamaica to New York City, the airplane experiences brief turbulence, but when it lands, its passengers find out that five and a half years have passed while they were in the air. Everyone aboard the flight was presumed dead during this time.
The finale of Manifest season 3 left plenty of unanswered questions for audiences to ponder and the show grew in popularity after it was added to Netflix. Its subsequent cancellation inspired a fervent fan campaign that called for the show to be renewed so it could tie up all its loose ends. Rake originally planned for Manifest to run for six seasons, but it seemed that that would ultimately not come to fruition until the fan campaign (#SaveManifest) picked up steam. Reports surfaced earlier this month that Netflix was close to finalizing a deal to produce a final season of the show.
Now, Deadline reports that Netflix has, in fact, saved Manifest from cancellation. The streamer will produce a 20-episodes final season of the series to be split into multiple parts. Dallas, Roxburgh, and Ramirez have all reportedly closed deals to return, while Kaur and the rest of the series regulars remain in negotiations for their expected returns. The deal will also allow Netflix to stream Manifest‘s first three seasons globally. There’s no word on when Manifest season 4 could premiere.
The announcement from Netflix and Warner Bros. TV comes on the fan-dubbed “828 Day,” landing on August 28 and the announcement being dropped at 8:28 AM PT in honor of Montego Air Flight 828. While it’s not all that unusual for a streaming service to revive a canceled television show in this era, Netflix saving Manifest certainly speaks to the tenacity of the series’ fans and the massive popularity the show experienced after its debut on the streamer.
This is likely due to the fact that Manifest season 3 ended on so many cliffhangers, leaving audiences desperate for answers. One member of that audience was prolific writer Stephen King, who promoted the #SaveManifest campaign on Twitter and likely spurred many to check out the show. While Manifest season 4 may be a long way off from premiering, audiences can rest easy knowing that they’ll get the answers they were longing for after the show’s third season.
