Mafia: Definitive Edition Gameplay Reveal Shows Off Extensive Remake

Multiple features of the extensive Mafia remake are on display in the newest gameplay reveal video, which offers almost a quarter of an hour of footage. This is by far the most anticipated project in Hangar13’s initiative of bringing together improved versions of games included in the Mafia trilogy.

Mafia: Definitive Edition is a complete remake of the original Mafia game, which has become a cult classic. The remake has been carefully and faithfully developed from scratch on Mafia 3 engine with an attempt to keep all the features that made the original project outstanding. That being said, there’re some inevitable changes that are presented by the developers as improvements and enhancements. For instance, the storyline has been expanded, and the gameplay has been thoroughly tweaked to fit the modern requirements. After months of exhausting wait, fans can now feast their eyes on the official gameplay reveal.

A 15-minute-long video demonstrating Mafia: Definitive Edition gameplay has been shared on the title’s official YouTube channel. The video starts with a short montage from the original The City of Lost Heaven release from 2002 but then jumps right into the modern remake, which makes an impressive transition. Mafia: Definitive Edition looks like a completely new game in terms of visual quality, although it stays true to the original in every other aspect. According to the developers, they’ve rebuilt the entire city from scratch redesigning some of the areas, but keeping the major landmarks intact. On top of that, a lot of effort has been put into detailing the environments and making the in-game world a living one. Hangar13 promises gameplay improvements and an extensive car park, but what remains almost untouched is the core dramatic story of Tommy Angelo, although there would be additional side missions expanding the plot.

Judging by the fans’ impressions, Mafia’s gameplay reveal has left them predominantly satisfied. Some players are expressing their slight concerns over shooting mechanics, which look somewhat simplified. A few proposed improvements include making rapid reload times a bit longer and adding weight to weapons so that they feel more realistic. Voice acting is another questionable side of the remake, along with the sounds of guns, according to players. That being said, fans seem to be absolutely delighted with the overall visual quality and stunning lighting effects. The devil is in the details, though, and users have already noticed that the modern remake lacks some interactivity and responsiveness in characters’ actions. Moreover, Tommy Angelo, a humble cab driver, acts like a professionally trained soldier in almost every scene – which is odd.

While the remaster of Mafia 2 wasn’t received quite well because of the disappointing quality of the project (presumably conditioned by the rushed production and release), the remake of Mafia looks a lot more promising. There’s a sensible pressure on the development team from Hangar13, which has no excuses to let the remake flop. The original Mafia is an iconic game, which was very close to GTA 3 in terms of execution. Some believe that The City of Lost Heaven was ultimately better than Rockstar’s hit, and the audience of loyal fans expects the remake to be at least as good as the original game once was.

Mafia: Definitive Edition releases September 25 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
