‘Machete Kills’ Gets an Official Synopsis and Release Date

Robert Rodriguez failed to release a project in 2012, after churning out new movies for three years straight. However, that’s because he was busy putting together two sequels for release in 2013: the Frank Miller graphic novel adaptation Sin City: A Dame to Kill For and Machete Kills, a followup to the fake Grindhouse trailer-turned real Exploitation throwback (or ‘Mexploitation flick’, if you will).

A Dame to Kill For is among the year’s most anticipated movies and arrives in October. However, Machete Kills – the second in a planned trilogy starring Danny Trejo as the eponymous, non-texting, ex-Federale – will beat it to the scene, when it opens a month earlier.

Open Road Films has set Machete Kills for theatrical release on September 13th, 2013, where it will open against Lionsgate’s I, Frankenstein comic book adaptation and face competition from the second weekend for sci-fi threequel Riddick. The official press release includes a synopsis for the Machete sequel, which is based on a screenplay by Kyle Ward (who penned the stalled Kane & Lynch adaptation) and story that Rodriguez co-conceived with his brother, Marcel.

Check out that plot summary below:

In MACHETE KILLS, Danny Trejo returns as ex-Federale agent MACHETE, who is recruited by the President of the United States for a mission which would be impossible for any mortal man – he must take down a madman revolutionary and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war and anarchy across the planet.

The POTUS in Machete Kills is being played by Charlie Sheen, while Mel Gibson is portraying the “eccentric billionaire arms dealer” (based on previous rumors). Meanwhile, Antonio Banderas, Demián Bichir (Savages), Cuba Gooding, Jr. (Red Tails), William Sadler (Damages) and Marko Zaror (Undisputed 3) are among the male cast members.

The rest of the female cast for Machete Kills includes Michelle Rodriguez (The Fast and the Furious 6), Jessica Alba, Vanessa Hudgens (Spring Breakers), Sofia Vergara and pop star Lady Gaga.

However, there’s no mention in Open Roads’ press release of Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Into Darkness), despite Trejo himself being the source for her association with the project. Whether that means she wasn’t able to commit or is just showing up for a (not so) surprise cameo, remains to be seen.
