Macaulay Culkin Wears A Home Alone Mask That’s Utterly Terrifying

Macaulay Culkin showed off a face mask inspired by his iconic Home Alone role, and some people find it to be a bit creepy. Culkin’s career really got started in 1989 with the John Candy comedy Uncle Buck. He eventually became the single biggest child star of the ’90s, starring in a string of popular studio movies that included My GirlThe Good Son, and Richie Rich.

But no movie was bigger than the first Home Alone, where Culkin plays Kevin McCallister, the troublemaking son whose family accidentally leaves him at home to fend off burglars breaking into his house. Through a series of inventive booby traps, Kevin successfully defeats the two crooks (played by Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern) and reunites with his family for Christmas. Not only did Home Alone become a Christmas classic and spawn a franchise, but it also held the title of highest-grossing live-action comedy film of all time for more than 20 years after its release.

Culkin has never been afraid to lean into the movie that made him a giant star. In a new tweet reminding people to mask up to stop the spread of COVID-19, the now 40-year-old Culkin posted a selfie of himself donning a mask inspired by his Home Alone character’s famous screaming face. Culkin himself even calls out how creepy it looks, referring to it as “the flayed skin of my younger self.” Check out his mask PSA below.

Culkin has managed to stay just as busy in his adult years as he did during his childhood. He’s maintained a strong presence in digital media, guest-appearing in the popular Half in the Bag web series, and creating his own comedy site called Bunny Ears that lampoons various lifestyle websites. He’s set to star in American Horror Story Season 10. And, as previously mentioned, he doesn’t shy away from paying tribute to or even reprising his Kevin McCallister role: look at the hilarious Google Assistant commercial he starred in, where he shaves his face, jumps on the bed, and recreates other scenes from Home Alone as a grown man.

Between the upcoming Home Alone reboot and Culkin’s repeated nods to the original movie, there seems to be an emerging market for ’90s nostalgia right now. Even if these new properties don’t end up being as good as the originals, older audiences can still enjoy passing on these beloved movies or TV shows to a new generation. The same way Fuller House brought back fans of Full House while also roping in new fans. Culkin reprising his role as Kevin McCallister in the reboot could have the same result: bringing back ’90s kids who grew up on the original Christmas classic while simultaneously building a new audience.
