Having brought the mechanical villains to life, Jason Blum addresses the winning odds of a fight between M3GAN and Five Nights at Freddy’s‘ Freddy Fazbear. Blum has spearheaded the long-gestating adaptation of Scott Cawthon’s iconic horror video game franchise, having acquired the rights in 2017 and forging ahead as multiple directors came and left the project. Though not a critical hit thus far, Five Nights at Freddy’s looks to continue Blumhouse’s box office success after M3GAN, on track to earn a massive $68 million in its opening weekend.

While speaking exclusively with Screen Rant at New York Comic-Con 2023, Blum was asked who he thought would win in a fight between M3GAN and Freddy Fazbear. The producer took a moment to consider the battle, acknowledging that the prospect “is a tough one.” He would ultimately land on the belief that “M3GAN might win“, though didn’t elucidate on why he thought so.

M3GAN vs. Freddy Fazbear Could Revive A Fan-Favorite Horror Concept

Horror franchise crossovers have been a staple through the likes of comic books and video games, with such properties as Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash and Dead by Daylight bringing genre fans’ favorite characters together. Even before this, the days of Universal Classic Monsters saw Dracula, Frankenstein and other iconic creatures cross paths, be it to fight one another or terrorize the world together.

While this may have once been a popular concept, horror franchise crossovers have petered out on screen, especially in regard to characters fighting against one another. Two of the more popular examples of this were in the form of 2003’s Freddy vs. Jason, seeing the Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th antagonists clash, and the Alien vs. Predator movies. Though the former retained some of the slasher thrills of their respective franchises, the latter took a more action-oriented approach to bringing the extraterrestrial threats together.

Given part of the allure of the Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise has been its effective jump scares, the darkly comedic nature of M3GAN could make for a somewhat tonal clash should the two cross over. However, given the viral popularity of the two properties and a sequel already in the works for the latter movie, the video game adaptation could find a way to expand to other fields should it overcome its negative reviews to rival M3GAN‘s box office numbers.
