M. Night Shyamalan Personally Financed Glass, Split, and The Visit

A new report reveals that director M. Night Shyamalan personally financed his movies Glass, Split, and The Visit. For many years, Shyamalan was at the top of Hollywood with his unique films that featured supernatural themes and twist endings. Shyamalan has had a lot of flops during his career, but seems to be back on top thanks to his more recent films and the upcoming release of Glass.

Shyamalan made a name for himself in the late ’90s early 2000s with films like The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Signs, which ended up being both critically praised and financially successful. As his career continued, Shyamalan ran into some issues with many of his films being panned by fans and critics alike, such as The Last Airbender and After Earth. With After Earth being considered a box office failure, Shyamalan’s career seemed to be at an all-time low, before he redeemed himself with the found footage film The Visit in 2015. Now, it has been revealed that Shyamalan personally financed his three most recent movies.

According to Forbes, Shyamalan used his own money to finance his recent films so that he could have more creative control over them, and because he possibly couldn’t get the financial backing from movie studios. When it came to The Visit, Shyamalan used a $5 million loan on his 125 acre Pennsylvania estate and for Split, the director put up $9 million. As for his upcoming film Glass, Shyamalan raised $20 million from the success of his past two films and by using more collateral from his Pennsylvania estate.

While his two most recent films have done well financially and critically, Glass looks like it might be sending Shyamalan back downhill. Early reactions for Glass have been mostly negative, which has given the film a”Rotten” score on Rotten Tomatoes. With that in mind, Glass likely won’t flop at the box office despite the negative reviews, as it’s projected to make around $105-120 million worldwide during its opening weekend.

Since Glass is the third and final film in Shyamalan’s Unbreakable trilogy, it isn’t a big surprise that people would want to visit the theater to see his latest flick. That being said, with the fact that Shyamalan funded the movie, it makes it even more important that Glass succeeds at the box office this weekend. If the movie were to flop financially, Shyamalan’s reputation would once again take a hit, but so would his wallet.
