The Luther: The Fallen Sun trailer has been unleashed upon the world, revealing the return of Idris Elba’s iconic detective John Luther. He originated the role on the BBC series Luther, which ran for five seasons from 2010 through 2019. The series followed Luther, the Detective Chief Inspector for the Serious and Serial Unit, as the crimes he is so skilled at stopping begin to eat away at his soul and fill him with a raging darkness.
Today, Netflix dropped the trailer for their Luther follow-up movie Luther: The Fallen Sun.
The trailer opens on returning character DSU Martin Schenk (Dermot Crowley) being informed that Luther has escaped prison. However, the troubled detective has a very good reason for doing so in Luther: The Fallen Sun‘s story: Andy Serkis’ tech mogul serial killer David Robey is on the loose, wreaking havoc with his control over surveillance technology, and must be stopped.
Every New And Returning Character In Luther: The Fallen Sun
While Serkis’ character is new to the enterprise, the Luther film re-teams many familiar faces both in front of and behind the camera. In addition to Elba’s return to the role, the film was directed by Jamie Payne, who helmed four episodes of the series. The screenplay was also written by series creator Neil Cross.
So far, Crowley is the only other actor to be confirmed to reprise their role from the original Luther series. However, it seems likely that there are some cameos waiting in the wings, either in flashbacks that inform Luther’s current character or briefly helping the disgraced detective during various stages of his manhunt. Characters that could appear include Ruth Wilson’s Alice Morgan, Michael Smiley’s DS Benny Silver, and Patrick Malahide’s George Cornelius, all of whom appeared on multiple seasons, including the final one.
While the Luther: The Fallen Sun trailer offers some insight into the overarching plot, it is unclear exactly who his prison break accomplice is. While it may be a returning character that Netflix is keeping hidden for now, it could be his new companion, played by two-time Oscar nominee Cynthia Erivo. Other cast members joining the Luther universe include Lauryn Ajufo as Anya, Natasha Patel as Lydia Deng, Henry Hereford as Brian Lee, and Jess Liaudin in an unspecified role.
