Will Luther Surpass Glass Onion’s Box Office?

Luther Movie Teaser Reveals Netflix & Theatrical Release Dates

Though originally slated for a streaming release, it will be interesting to see why Netflix is seeking to bring Luther: The Fallen Sun to the big screen prior. The streaming platform generally saves theatrical releases for its big-name projects, or those they’re looking to get in the eyes of awards season voters, as was the case this past year with Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, which won the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, which garnered two Globe nominations, and Noah Baumbach’s White Noise, which landed one Globe nomination for Adam Driver’s lead performance. It’s Rian Johnson’s whodunnit sequel, however, that has been the major talk of the town surrounding Netflix’s theatrical release model, with many critics and audiences alike expressing disappointment that it was only given a one-week release, despite the first film clearing over $311 million during its run at the box office.

While Johnson has since expressed his hopes at pushing for a wider theatrical run come time for Knives Out 3‘s release, Netflix may already be testing this out with Luther: The Fallen Sun. Coming fresh off the heels of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery reportedly bringing in Netflix’s largest box office haul, the streaming platform may feel confident in the anticipation surrounding Elba’s return to carry the film to an even larger gross than Johnson’s similarly anticipated sequel. However, at the time of writing, it’s unclear whether Luther: The Fallen Sun‘s theatrical release will be longer or feature more theaters than Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.

Penned by show creator Neil Cross, Luther: The Fallen Sun will pick up sometime after the events of the series finale as Luther breaks out of prison in order to track down the gruesome serial killer, Andy Serkis’ David Robey, after failing to capture the cyber psychopath in the past. Alongside Elba and Serkis, the ensemble cast for the Luther movie will see the returns of Ruth Wilson as Alice and Dermot Crowley’s DSU Martin Schenk alongside franchise newcomers Cynthia Erivo, Jess Liaudin, Lauryn Ajufo, Natasha Patel and Henry Hereford. While no future plans have been addressed by Elba or Cross, audiences can at least look forward to the long-awaited return of the tormented detective when Luther: The Fallen Sun hits theaters on February 24 followed by Netflix on March 10.
