Luke Skywalker Officially Nearly Chose a Red Lightsaber (Not Green)

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: Revelations #1The new Star Wars: Revelations one-shot is teasing the construction of Luke Skywalker’s green lightsaber alongside the dark potential for a red saber as well. As seen in a vision granted to Darth Vader by the Eye of Webbish Bog, it seems as though Luke finding his green kyber crystal ahead of Return of the Jedi lightsaber will coincide with the discovery of a much darker piece of kyber.

In Marvel Comics’ current Star Wars series, Luke has been wielding a yellow-bladed saber he found in an ancient Jedi Temple dating back to the High Republic era. This replaced his father’s blue lightsaber which was lost along with his hand during his duel with Vader in Empire Strikes Back. While the yellow lightsaber has been an exciting addition to Luke’s Jedi path between Empire and Return of the Jedi, fans know it’s simply a placeholder until he eventually builds his iconic green saber.

Now, the new Star Wars: Revelations #1 from Marc Guggenheim and a collection of all-star artists sees the Eye of Webbish Bog trying to warn Darth Vader of events that may soon come to pass across the galaxy. While Vader questions the validity of these visions of the future, a large splash page features a collection of exciting futures. As such, one of the most notable elements is Luke holding both a green and red kyber crystal in his hands.

Was Luke Tempted By The Dark Side Before Building His Green Lightsaber?

Luke Skywalker Officially Nearly Chose a Red Lightsaber (Not Green)

While some red kyber crystals found in Sith lightsabers are synthetic, most are normal crystals that have bled after a Sith Lord has poured their hate into them. Given their deep connection to the Force, kyber is essentially a living element that can have adverse effects if corrupted. Case in point, the only other time Luke wielded a red lightsaber was in Star Wars Annual #4 and was nearly corrupted by the its darkness. As such, one has to wonder if this new red crystal will similarly tempt Luke to the dark side before Return of the Jedi.

While Luke will go on to build his green lightsaber and redeem his father from the dark side, the possibility of being tempted prior to his encounter with Palpatine is a pretty big moment. While this future might not be fully set in stone for the Star Wars galaxy, the possibility for this never-before-seen chapter in Luke Skywalker’s Jedi path is exciting nonetheless. Star Wars: Revelations #1 is on sale now from Marvel Comics.
