Luke Skywalker inadvertently took a Sith Lord into a critical Force vergence in the Star Wars canon before Return of the Jedi. In between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, Luke Skywalker was committed to his Jedi training, increasing his strength in the Force to eventually become a Jedi knight and face his father Darth Vader. As a result, this included a dark encounter with the spirit of a mysterious rogue Sith Lord from the ancient past.
As seen in the canonical Star Wars comics, Luke Skywalker does quite a bit between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Much of Luke’s training during this period was self-taught using Jedi texts and a holocron while helping the Rebellion evade the Empire after the Battle of Hoth. To that end, Luke’s first experience with kyber crystals in the Star Wars timeline results in the young Jedi being transported to a Force vergence offering access to multiple points across time and space. As such, Luke seemingly finds himself in the World Between Worlds seen in both Star Wars Rebels and Ahsoka (if not a very similar Force nexus).

A Familiar Force Vergence Accessed By Dark Kyber
Having encountered a kyber specialist on the world of Christophsis during his search for a new lightsaber, Luke is encouraged to connect with a piece of living kyber crystal that had been bled by a Sith Lord, (the reason for Sith lightsabers’ crimson color). As such, this combination of Luke’s power in the light combined with an artifact steeped in the dark side saw Luke’s spirit entering a Force vergence, one that put him directly in front of his father’s Force spirit when Darth Vader himself entered a Force vergence decades prior.
However, the young Jedi also met someone else before Luke and Darth Vader faced each other in this version of the World Between Worlds. Initially, Luke found himself in a great audience chamber filled with guests while a brand-new Sith Lord was seated upon a dark throne, marked with the emblem of the Sith. Welcoming Luke into his hall, this new Sith was just as interested in knowing how Luke had come before him as Skywalker as his connection with the darkened kyber seemingly brought him and this new Sith Lord together through this vergence.

Referred to by upcoming previews as a “Rogue Sith Lord”, this new Sith claims to be without the typical emotions that typically fuel the dark side such as pain, rage, and hatred. Instead, it’s implied that he may gain his power through the dark emotions of others, effectively draining them (which would explain why his other guests appear to be nothing more than husks). Additionally, this new Sith could very well be the one who bled the kyber Luke accessed.
Luke Skywalker’s appearance could be exactly what this Rogue Sith Lord’s spirit needed to emerge once more, presumably having his spirit tied to his kyber who now has a way out. At any rate, it’s been confirmed that Luke’s time with this Rogue Sith has only just begun having kept the red kyber while intending to continue experimenting with it in future issues of Star Wars that are still to come.
