Lucifer’s Fifth Season On Netflix Might Not Be The Final Season

Season 5 of Lucifer may not be its last after all, as Netflix considers continuing the series past its previously announced final season. The popular drama features Tom Ellis as the Devil himself, who’s taken up residence in Los Angeles. There, he runs a nightclub and helps the LAPD solve crimes. Lucifer has a history of surprise renewals and cancellations. It originally aired on Fox before being cancelled after season 3. Thanks to fan support, Netflix saved the show and released a 10-episode season 4 last May.

The series rose in popularity following its move to Netflix. However, a month after season 4 aired, the streamer renewed Lucifer for a fifth and final season. Over the summer, Netflix revealed that the final season would be super-sized in comparison to season 4 and consist of 16 episodes total. Those episodes don’t yet have a release date. With the announcement of the final season came more fan outcry, this time for a season 6. Even superstar Kelly Clarkson weighed in, asking Netflix to “do her a solid and re-up the show for season 6.

Now, it seems pleading from fans and celebrities alike may have worked in Lucifer’s favor once again. Per TVLine, Netflix is currently in talks with Warner Bros. to continue the series past season 5. It’s unclear what exactly that would entail, though the most obvious choice is a surprise season 6 renewal. Netflix previously announced that 24 actor Dennis Haysbert will play God in Lucifer season 5. It will also feature a musical episode, though the circumstances are being kept under wraps.

Though fans don’t yet know when Lucifer season 5 will premiere, they have seen Lucifer himself since the season 4 finale: the character put in a surprise cameo during The CW’s Crisis on Infinite Earths event. In a brief scene, Lucifer of Earth-666 was visited by Legends of Tomorrow‘s John Constantine and Arrow‘s Mia Queen and John Diggle. They came to him for help getting into Purgatory to fetch Oliver Queen’s soul. Though Lucifer was able to assist them, Oliver ultimately chose to become the Spectre instead of coming back to life.

At this point, Lucifer fans are very used to surprise renewals for the show, so this news shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. This is especially true considering the show’s success on Netflix. Many were surprised by the cancellation after season 4 was well-received. The announcements about season 5 so far point to the show going out with a bang, but a potential season 6 renewal is even better. Hopefully, Lucifer continues to defy odds, with Netflix and Warner Bros. agreeing to bring it back from the dead.
