Lucifer star Lauren German sheds light on Chloe’s selfless acts in the final season. A blend of fantasy and police procedural, Lucifer premiered in 2016. It follows the character of Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis) as he abandons Hell and decides to live in Los Angeles. Morningstar initially opens his own nightclub and soon finds himself acting as a consultant for the LAPD, and gaining feelings for his partner Chloe (German). The duo quickly became one of the emotional backbones of the series, with many fans rooting for them to get together.
Lucifer season 5 ended with the titular character defeating his brother Michael, sacrificing himself to resurrect Chloe, and becoming God. In some ways, it was the fulfillment of what the protagonist always wanted. Writers on the series have noted that the final season will show the fallout of what happens after Lucifer has achieved his goals. In new remarks, German shed light on how the game-changing finale altered Chloe’s relationship with Lucifer and what comes next.
In an interview with EW ahead of season 6, which premieres September 10 on Netflix, German acknowledged that Chloe and Lucifer haven’t always been on the same page in their relationship but says that they function as a team in the show’s next batch of episodes. In particular, the actress promises that both the detective and the Devil will make remarkable sacrifices for one another. You can read German’s quote below.
“Even when Lucifer is feeling insecure, Chloe is saying, ‘I believe in you. I know you can do this. And there’s some very beautiful selfless acts in the last season on both of their parts where it’s heartbreaking, but [they say,] ‘For you, I will do this. For your greater good, for your happiness. For you, I will sacrifice A, B, and C.’ So I would say it’s the most kind of as a team that you’ve seen them, on the same page, ready for the same thing. It’s just, how did they get there? How can they get that going?”
The shift that German alludes to is a significant one for the couple. From the very start of the series, Lucifer and Chloe have been at odds in terms of how they see each other. They have had feelings for each other at different times, learned truths about each other at different times, and they’ve never been quite able to experience happiness together as a pairing for very long before something interferes. While these disagreements are fundamentally rooted in each of their characters, it’s also in line with the way some of the most memorable television relationships play out often as a waiting game. In the most recent season, Lucifer claimed that he did not love Chloe. It was only one example of the obstacles the couple has faced throughout the supernatural drama.
Given that history, it will be a relief for fans that Lucifer and Chloe might learn to truly work together as a unit, like German is suggesting. The trailers have offered glimpses of the new dynamic, showing that Chloe is noticeably more on the same wavelength as her partner. It’s true that the sacrifices won’t be easy, but these latest comments indicate that the show’s final outing will be different because the two main characters have learned and grown beyond their early dynamic. It’s one more aspect fans have to look forward to with Lucifer season 6’s debut.
