Lucifer Season 6 Is A Love Letter To The Show, Says Showrunners

Lucifer co-showrunner Joe Henderson says that season 6 is a love letter to the show. The fantasy series based on the DC Comics character created by Neil Gaiman for The Sandman, who then became the center of a spin-off comic series, follows the life of the Devil after abandoning Hell to move to Los Angeles. The series premiered on Fox in 2016 and ran for three seasons before being canceled, but was given a second chance after being picked up by Netflix for two more seasons. Lucifer was initially planned to end with season 5, however the showrunners and lead actor renewed their contracts for a sixth season.

The first half of season 5 hit Netflix in August 2020. Nine months after the release of the first half, season 5B began streaming Friday and focuses on Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis) facing off against his scheming twin brother, the Archangel Michael, also played by Ellis. With the arrival of their father God (Dennis Haysbert) and his announcement that he is retiring with the hopes that one of his sons will take over his role, the two brothers square off to see who will replace their father. Season 5 has been one of the more epic seasons, with the showdown between the two brothers being the big draw, but the sixth and final season will have a more sentimental tone, according to the showrunners.

In an interview with ET, Lucifer co-showrunners Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich spoke about the final season, and how it will look following the end of season 5. Henderson says that while season 5 has been grand and full of action, season 6 will complete the journey of Lucifer, calling it a love letter to the show.

I’ll just say season 5 is our big bombastic season. Season 6 is our love letter to the show. And we stick the landing. I really do believe it.

Henderson and Modrovich also used the words “emotional” and “bittersweet” to describe the final season. While Season 5 has focused on the all-out battle between the twin brothers, the showrunners have implied that the final season will wrap things up for the characters that fans have followed for the last six seasons. The showrunners have also hinted that season 6 will feature a time jump, similar to seasons 4 and 5.

While not many other details about season 6 have been revealed, it certainly sounds like it will satisfy Lucifer fans who have been keeping up with the show sine the beginning. After six seasons, it’s time to wrap up Lucifer’s story, and that means that it will likely be an emotional ending. After fans finish binging the final episodes of season 5, they are likely going to be anticipating the sixth and final season even more. Luckily for them, production on Lucifer season 6 has already begun, which means the end is officially in sight.
