Lucifer Season 5 Premiere Pays Off A Long-Running Gag

Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Lucifer‘s season 5 premiere, “Really Sad Devil Guy.”

The premiere episode of Lucifer season 5, “Really Sad Devil Guy,” continued a running gag involving an unfortunate thief who has appeared in every season premiere since season 2. The episode also gave a proper name to the thief, who had been known in the fandom as “Mr. Said Out B*tch.”

The thief first appeared in the Lucifer season 2 premiere, “Everything’s Coming Up Lucifer,” when Lucifer and Amenadiel thwarted his robbery of a jewelry store, thinking the thief, who had died of a heart attack and been resuscitated a day earlier, was their mother possessing his body. Never one to let an evil-doer go unpunished, Lucifer left the thief standing in the middle of the store with no gun and no clothes but his underpants, his shoes (which were tied together) and a pretty tiara.  The thief ran into Lucifer again in the season 3 premiere, “They’re Back, Aren’t They?”: he was in the middle of escaping prison while Lucifer was trying to get back to Los Angeles after being left for dead in the desert. It was during this encounter, which once again ended with the thief half-naked and humiliated as he fled into the desert, that the thief earned his fan-given name. Lucifer asked for his name after the criminal told him to “get out” of his (stolen) vehicle, to which the thief replied, “said out, b*tch!” Lucifer politely responded, “Mr. Saidoutb*tch,” while ignoring the gun the thief was pointing at him.

Season 4’s premiere episode, which was the first produced after the series moved to Netflix, saw a depressed Lucifer decide to solve the thief’s financial problems after the thief and his crew showed up at his club intending to rob him. Lucifer even took off his pants and threw them into the deal as a peace offering. Mr. Saidoutb*tch was confused but ultimately took the money and ran. That was the last anyone saw of him until Lucifer‘s season 5 premiere, which opened with Mr. Saidoutb*tch living the high life on a yacht. Sadly, his joy was short-lived, as Lucifer appeared to inform him that someone was about to kill him — and that this had already happened 200 times before because the thief was in Hell, which forces a person to relieve the worst moments of their life over and over.

This set up the core conceit of “Really Sad Devil Guy,” in which Lucifer, bored after spending a relative few thousand years supervising Hell while two months passed on Earth, offered to solve the thief’s murder so that he could have some peace of mind while suffering for all eternity. At the same time, Chloe Decker and Maze tried to solve the same case on Earth, still finding a way to work with Lucifer because, as the body count rose, witnesses wound up in Hell to give Lucifer the clues he needed to move forward. He then sent demonic messengers up to Earth to tell Chloe what he had discovered. In the middle of all this, the thief was finally identified by his proper name; Lee Garner.

It’s unclear if Lee Garner will be making an appearance in season 6 of Lucifer. His story is largely resolved by the events of “Really Sad Devil Guy” and it’s hard to imagine any continuation of his story beyond him somehow finding a way to escape from Hell. On the other hand, if there’s anyone hapless enough to accidentally find a way out of Hell and back into The Devil’s clutches on Earth, it’s the man they call “Mr. Said Out B*tch.”
