Lucifer Season 5 Images: First Look At Noir Flashback Episode

New images from Lucifer season 5 reveal fans’ first look at the show’s upcoming noir episode. Lucifer first premiered in 2016 on Fox and ran for three seasons before it was canceled. However, Lucifer’s sizable fan base campaigned for its resurrection, and Netflix soon picked the series up for two additional seasons. While season 4 arrived in May 2019, the wait for season 5 has been a bit longer. Just last week, Netflix announced that Lucifer season 5 will premiere later this summer, on August 21. Then, a day later, Netflix also announced Lucifer had been renewed for a sixth season, which will also be the show’s last (for real this time).

Lucifer follows the titular lord of Hell (Tom Ellis) after he leaves his domain behind to run a nightclub in Los Angeles. In addition to that, Lucifer finds himself assisting the LAPD on various cases after he catches the attention of Detective Chloe Decker (Lauren German). The Lucifer season 4 finale put a twist on things by seeing Lucifer return to hell following Chloe’s declaration of love. It’s expected that he’ll return to Los Angeles in some form, but exactly how or why hasn’t been revealed just yet.

What has been revealed, though, are some images from Lucifer season 5’s fourth episode (via EW), titled “It Never Ends Well for the Chicken.” This episode will revisit Lucifer’s previous trip to Los Angeles in the 1940s for what, “to a certain extent, is Lucifer’s first case,” according to co-showrunner Joe Henderson. “There is a case, there is a mystery to solve, but it’s just more filtering our [show’s] language through noir.” Plus, this episode will dive into the past of Lucifer’s right-hand woman, Maze (Lesley Ann-Brandt). These flashbacks are structured as a story Lucifer is telling to Chloe’s daughter Trixie (Scarlett Estevez), sort of in the vein of The Princess Bride. You can see the images in the space below.

As some might have noticed, not all the characters present in the noir flashbacks would have actually been included in the 1940s. As Henderson explained, “Also, the big fun of the Princess Bride device is, as he’s telling the story, he’s basically putting the characters we know and love into it.” The noir framing certainly seems like it’ll provide some good fun to Lucifer season 5, as it’ll both feature a mystery and some new character development. Lucifer isn’t the only series to have a noir episode recently, as the final season of Agents of SHIELD recently went black and white too.

Another interesting tidbit about Lucifer season 5 is that it’s being split into two parts. Netflix ordered an additional eight episodes, and it was decided that season 5 would arrive in two chunks of eight. The first, as mentioned, will premiere later this summer, and the second doesn’t have an official date yet. However, barring no complications, it’ll likely debut sometime in 2021. No word yet if it’ll have any trips to the past or black and white episodes.

Lucifer season 5 will premiere on Netflix on August 21.
