Lucifer Renewed For Season 6 At Netflix, Will Be Its Last

Just one day after the premiere date for season 5 was announced, Netflix has officially renewed Lucifer for season 6, and it will also be its last. Lucifer, which is based on the DC Comics character created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth, and Mike Dringenberg, first aired on Fox in 2016. It told the story of Lucifer (Tom Ellis), the Lord of Hell who decides to leave his domain behind and run a nightclub in Los Angeles. In doing so, he also finds himself involved with the LAPD as he helps them solve crimes. Lucifer was a solid performer on Fox for three seasons before it was canceled. However, the show’s fanbase started a campaign to save it, and Netflix soon picked Lucifer up for an additional two seasons.

Lucifer season 4 dropped on Netflix in May 2019, and fans have been waiting for news on season 5 ever since. When Netflix first picked Lucifer up, season 5 was supposed to be its last. However, reports emerged earlier this year suggesting Netflix was interested in pursuing an additional season. This was further supported by showrunners Ildy Modrovich and Joe Henderson inking new deals with the streamer. Ellis entered negotiations for the hypothetical sixth season, and though they hit a few speed bumps along the way, Ellis officially signed a new deal at the end of May.

This is quickly becoming a busy week for Lucifer news, seeing as yesterday marked the reveal of season 5’s premiere date. According to the official Lucifer social media account, the series has finally been renewed for season 6. The post also reiterated that this is the final season, “like, FINAL final,” in a nod to how many times Lucifer has seemingly approached its end. The announcement also has some fun with the number 6 in regards to the Devil. Meanwhile, the first half of Lucifer season 5 will arrive on Netflix on August 21. Instead of being comprised of only 10 episodes like season 4, season 5 will have 16 episodes in total and will be split into two blocks of 8. Netflix hasn’t indicated when the remaining installments of season 5 will drop, but it can be assumed that it’ll be sometime next year.

Additionally, it isn’t clear how many episodes Lucifer season 6 will have, but fans will likely be thrilled with any episode count seeing as it wasn’t even supposed to happen in the first place. Ellis is already confirmed to return for the additional season, though it’s less clear about who will be joining him. Most likely, it’ll depend on the events of season 5. Nonetheless, Lucifer fans now have a bit more time with their favorite ruler of Hell.

Lucifer season 5 will premiere on Netflix on August 21.
