[WARNING: This post contains SPOILERS for Lucifer Season 1]

What’s the devil to do when he gets bored in Hell? Move to Los Angeles and open a bar, of course. Fox’s Lucifer is adapted from a comic of the same name from DC/Vertigo, and in its debut season, showed an interesting mix of cop procedural and supernatural/fantasy mythos, focusing largely on Lucifer running away from his responsibilities – and his brother, Amenadiel, trying to bring him back.
Things go haywire toward the end of the season when Lucifer finds himself mortal and dying, with the finale seeing him, presumably, brought back to life by God, being shown that someone or something terrible has escaped from Hell. It turns out that what broke out of its case was more than enough to frighten Satan himself: his mother.
TV Line is reporting that said mother will be played by Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica, Powers). Helfer, a sci-fi/fantasy fan favorite is no stranger to playing tough and devious female characters. Watching her go toe-to-toe with Lucifer’s Tom Ellis is sure to make for some fun TV this Fall, especially judging by the early description of her character, ‘Charlotte’:
“Trapped in Hell for thousands of years by God (her ex-husband), the Mother of Angels is now free on Earth. Once reunited with Lucifer, it will become clear that she’s the one he takes after. Mom is fearless and has a strong conviction for who she is and what she deserves. However, mother and son do not share the same opinion when it comes to humanity. Everything that fascinates Lucifer about people repels Mom — a disdain that’s highlighted by that fact that Mom’s trapped in a human body for her stay on Earth. Lucifer’s desperate to find out what Mom’s up to, but she claims that all she wants is to spend time with her sons again. But can the devil’s mom really be that innocent?”
Throwing his mother into the mix is going to add an interesting dynamic, and is a conscious choice from showrunner Joe Henderson who is “doing a little world building,” since this relationship is not fleshed out in the comics.
Given all of Lucifer’s pent up aggression toward his father’s overbearing demeanor, it’s not surprising that he and his mother would have so much in common. Lucifer‘s second season looks to prove that adult children of divorce, even angels, still have parental issues. Henderson goes on to say:
“This is us taking a step and exploring the answer to a question a lot of people never asked and staking our own claim. There are a lot of directions we can go and we’ve chosen one that we’re really excited about.”
His bar, Lux: in shambles. Mazi, his best friend and right hand: no longer speaking to him. And, after a surprising reconciliation, Amenadiel is the only friend Lucifer has. It’s a heck of a place to start the show’s second season, so let’s see if his mother’s appearance on Earth will help to raise a little Hell.
